、ional Standard X3.265-1995.) This standard presents physical and magnetic requirements for 12.57-mm (0.495inch), 36-track magnetic tape cartridge to be used for information interchange among processing systems, communication systems, and associated equipment. The X3B5 Subcommittee on Digital Magneti

、c Tape, which developed this standard, consists of experienced and qualified specialists on manufacturing magnetic tape, and on recording digital information on magnetic tape. This standard supports the recording density of 1944 ftpmm (49 378 ftpi) and complements American National Standard for info

、agnetic tape car- tridges - 18 tracks, 1491 data bytes per millimetre (37 871 data bytes per inch), IS0 9661:1988. The cartridge, magnetic tape, and recording format represent a significant advancement in reliability and volumetric efficiency for 12.57-mm (0.495inch) magnetic tape. In the developmen

、t of this stan- dard, careful consideration was given to current practices, existing equip- ment and supplies, the broadest possible acceptance, and to providing a basis for future improvements in the use of the cartridge medium. The standard contains specifications for the physical, magnetic, and p

、er- formance properties of the magnetic media, and the dimensions and char- acteristics of the cartridge. This standard includes a number of new criteria that are the result of experi- ences obtained in high-density recording on magnetic tape. As additional experience is gained, improvement in test

、methods and the need for addi- tional criteria should be expected. This is particularly relevant in the areas of mechanical interaction between the magnetic tape and the recording head. There are seven annexes to this standard. Annexes A and B are normative. Annexes C through G are informative and n

、ot considered part of this standard. Requests for interpretation, suggestions for improvement or addenda, or defect reports are welcome. They should be sent to the X3 Secretariat, Information Technology Industry Council, 1250 Eye Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005. This standard was process

Committee approval of the standard does not necessarily imply that all members voted for its approval. At the time it approved this standard, the X3 Committee had the following members: James D. Co

、TIONAL STANDARD American National Standard for Information Technology - ANSI X3.265-l 995 Magnetic Tape and Cartridge for Information Interchange - Unrecorded, 36-track, Parallel, 12.57 mm (0.495 in), 1944 ftpmm (49 378 ftpi) Group-Coded Recording 1 Scope, purpose, and application 1.1 Scope This sta

、ndard provides the requirements for an unrecorded tape cartridge to be used for information interchange among information-processing systems. Such a cartridge comprises two parts: - a case to provide protection of the media from contaminants and human handling, and to facilitate loading and unloadin

、g of the cartridge by the drive; - a magnetic tape of 12.573 mm (0.495 in) width held inside the case on a reel. The tape shall be transported on the reel for digital recording at a physical density of 1944 ftpmm (49 378 ftpi). 1.2 Purpose The purpose of this standard is to define the requirements a

、nd supporting test methods necessary to ensure information interchange at acceptable performance levels. It is distinct from a specification in that it delineates a minimum of restrictions consistent with compatibility in interchange transactions. The performance levels contained in this standard re

、present the minimum acceptable levels of performance for interchange purposes. They, therefore, represent the performance levels that the interchange items should meet or surpass during their useful life and thus define end-of-life crite- ria for interchange purposes. The performance levels in this

、standard are not intended to be employed as substitutes for purchase specifications. Wherever feasible, quantitative performance levels that shall be met or exceeded to comply with this standard are given. In all cases, including those in which quantitative limits for requirements falling within the

、 scope of this standard are not stated but left to agreement between the interchange par- ties, standard test methods and measurement procedures shall be used to determine such limits. The interchange parties complying with the applicable standards should be able to achieve com- patibility without the need for additional exchange of technical information. 1.3 Application 1.3.1 Conformance A magnetic tape cartridge conforms to this standard if it satisfies all requirements of this standard. The tape requirements shall be satisfied throughout the extent of the tape. 1.3.2 Dimensions
