The Fibre Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is intended for use in a high- performance general purpose mult

、i-node network and is designed for effi- cient operation with a peak data rate of 100 Mbit/s. It uses a Token Ring architecture with optical fibre as the transmission medium. FDDI provides for hundreds of nodes operating over an extent of tens of kilometers. Station Management (SMT) specifies the lo

、cal portion of the system manage- ment application process for FDDI, including the control required for proper operation of a station in an FDDI ring. SMT provides services such as con- nection management, station insertion and removal, station initialization, con- figuration management, fault isola

、tion and recovery, communications protocol for external authority, scheduling policies, and collection of statistics. The set of basic FDDI standards also includes the following standards: (a) A Media Access Control (MAC), which specifies the lower sublayer of the Data Link Layer for FDDI, including

、 the access to the medium, addressing, data checking, and data framing; (b) A Physical Layer Media Dependent (PMD), which specifies the lower sublayer of the Physical Layer for FDDI, including the power lev- els and characteristics of the optical transmitter and receiver, interface optical signal re

、quirements including jitter, the connector receptacle footprint, the requirements of conforming FDDI optical fibre cable plants, and the permissible bit error rates; (c) A Physical Layer Protocol (PHY), which specifies the upper sublayer of the Physical Layer for the FDDI. PHY presents the specifica

、tions and services provided for conforming FDDI attachment devices and specifies the data encode/decode, framing, and clocking requirements. PHY also specifies the elasticity buffer, smoothing, and repeat filter functions. American National Standards for PHY (ANSI X3.148-1 988), MAC (ANSI X3.139-198

、7), and PMD (ANSI X3.166-1990) have been approved and published,. In addition, FDDI standards are being processed as International Standards by standards committee ISO/IEC JTCl/SC 25. International Standards for PHY, MAC, and PMD (IS0 9314-1: 1989, 9314- 2: 1989 and ISO/IEC 9314-3: 1990, respectivel

、y) have also been pub- lished. SMT is a sophisticated document specifying many critical aspects of inter- operability in a multi-vendor FDDI network. It has proven to be by far the most difficult of the set of basic FDDI standards to complete with the work on SMT requiring a high degree of cooperati

、on between competing manu- facturers of FDDI equipment. An American National Standard for SMT (ANSI X3.229-l 994), representing the final standard in the set of basic FDDI standards was approved by X3T9 technical letter ballot and forwarded to X3 for approval as an ANS by the June 1992 X3T9 meeting.

、 The standard proposed herein is part of an effort to enhance this basic SMT standard. Two extensions to the basic FDDI have been approved as American National Standards and are in print. The first (ANSI X3.186-1992), for Hybrid Ring Control (HRC), commonly known as FDDI-II, extends the capa- bility

、 of FDDI to handle isochronous data streams at a multiplicity of data vi rates. The second (ANSI X3.184-1993), for a single mode optical fibre ver- sion of PMD (SMF-PMD), permits optical links of up to 60 km. Both are being processed as International Standards by ISO/IEC JTCiISC25. Other work curren

、tly in process, addressing alternate PMDs, is aimed at providing low-cost attachments for use in concentrator-to-workstation envi- ronments. These standards will be for a Low-Cost Fibre PMD (LCF-PMD) and a Twisted Pair PMD (TP-PMD). The LCF-PMD was approved by tech- I nical letter ballot and forward

、ed to X3 for approval as an ANS by the August X3T9 meeting. In addition, work is also underway toward direct attachment of FDDI to SONET links. The FDDI-II enhancement (HRC, ANSI X3.186-1992) referred to above, requires enhancements to the basic PHY, MAC and SMT standards for FDDI. These enhancement

、 standards are known as PHY-2, MAC-2 and SMT-2, respectively. The enhanced standards, PHY-2, MAC-2, and SMT-2 are each required to be interoperable with the corresponding basic FDDI standard when the FDDI network is operating in the basic mode, and furthermore, it is intend- ed that PHY, MAC, and SM

、T shall remain supported standards. Standards for PHY-2 (ANSI X3.231-1994) and MAC-2 (ANSI X3.239-1994), are complete. Each document has been approved by X3 and forwarded to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for approval as a Draft International Standard. Work on SMT-2, the en

、hanced version of SMT necessary for FDDI-II, has been divided into three separate projects as follows: (a) SMTP Common Services (SMTP-CS) is based on the common ser- vices portion of the basic SMT. This work is being done under project 961 D. (b) SMT-2 lsochronous Services (SMT-2-1s) is new work req

、uired to support the isochronous data streams offered by FDDI-II. This work is being done under project 962D. (c) SMTQ Packet Services (SMT-2-PS) is based on the packet services portion of the basic SMT. This work is being done under project 963D. This standard has two annexes, both of which are inf

They should be sent to National Committee for Information Technology Standards (NCITS), ITI, 1250 Eye Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005 This standa
