、 ANSI/ASAE EP576.2 OCT2012 Lighting And Marking Of Animal-Drawn Equipment American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers ASABE is a professional and technical organization, of members worldwide, who are dedicated to advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food, and biologic

、al systems. ASABE Standards are consensus documents developed and adopted by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers to meet standardization needs within the scope of the Society; principally agricultural field equipment, farmstead equipment, structures, soil and water resource

、 management, turf and landscape equipment, forest engineering, food and process engineering, electric power applications, plant and animal environment, and waste management. NOTE: ASABE Standards, Engineering Practices, and Data are informational and advisory only. Their use by anyone engaged in ind

Conformity does not ensure compliance with applicable ordinances, laws and regulations. Prospective users are responsible for pro

、tecting themselves against liability for infringement of patents. ASABE Standards, Engineering Practices, and Data initially approved prior to the society name change in July of 2005 are designated as “ASAE“, regardless of the revision approval date. Newly developed Standards, Engineering Practices

、and Data approved after July of 2005 are designated as “ASABE“. Standards designated as “ANSI“ are American National Standards as are all ISO adoptions published by ASABE. Adoption as an American National Standard requires verification by ANSI that the requirements for due process, consensus, and ot

、her criteria for approval have been met by ASABE. Consensus is established when, in the judgment of the ANSI Board of Standards Review, substantial agreement has been reached by directly and materially affected interests. Substantial agreement means much more than a simple majority, but not necessar

、ily unanimity. Consensus requires that all views and objections be considered, and that a concerted effort be made toward their resolution. CAUTION NOTICE: ASABE and ANSI standards may be revised or withdrawn at any time. Additionally, procedures of ASABE require that action be taken periodically to

Keywords: Animal-drawn vehicle, Horse drawn vehicle, Lighting, Marking, Pony cart, Safety, Slow-moving vehicle (SMV) 1 Purpose and Scope 1.1 This recommended practice establishes a unique identification system for slow-moving animal-drawn vehicles on public roadways or highways

、. 1.2 The identification system shall be used only on animal-drawn vehicles. 1.3 It is intended that this identification system be used to complement existing laws, rules and regulations in individual states, provinces, and municipalities. 1.4 It is recognized that this recommended practice can be a

、 cultural or religious issue and is not intended to devalue or replace those values. It is intended to provide options to those who would like to add or enhance lighting and marking of their animal-powered vehicles in the form of a voluntary consensus standard. 2 Normative References The following r

、nd Biological Engineers 3 5 Lighting 5.1 Animal-drawn vehicles should be equipped with a battery operated lighting system or a generator powered lighting system. Batteries may be typical storage, deep cycle or gel cell and should conform to SAE J537. 5.1.1 At least two headlamps, conforming to ANSI/

、ASABE S608, should be mounted symmetrically about the vehicle centerline facing forward on the front of the vehicle in a position which provides the least blockage from the drawing animal(s). 5.1.2 At least two red tail lamps, conforming to SAE J585, should be mounted symmetrically about the vehicle

、 centerline on the rear of the vehicle and as widely spaced laterally as practical and mounted between 0.75 and 3.7 m (2.5 and 12 ft) high 5.1.3 As an alternative to headlamps and tail lamps, at least two, double-faced lamps protruding from the sides at the widest point mounted between 0.75 and 3.7

、m (2.5 and 12 ft) high, visible to the front and rear may be used. The double-faced lamps will have a clear lens to the front and a red lens to the rear. 5.1.4 At least two flashing amber warning lamps conforming to SAE J974 should be mounted symmetrically about the centerline and as widely spaced l

、aterally as practicable. They should be visible from front and rear, and mounted between 0.75 and 3.7 m (2.5 and 12 ft) high. 5.1.5 Optional turn signal system may be incorporated into the rear red tail lamps or the flashing amber lamps. If they are incorporated into the flashing amber lamps or red

、tail lamps, the lamp that is positioned on the side of the turn should flash and the lamp on the side away from the turn should go to steady burn. 6 Marking 6.1 Marking for the rear of the vehicle should be 50 mm by 230 mm (2 in. by 9 in.) strips alternating between red retroreflective material and

、nonreflective red orange fluorescent material. The material should be used to outline the sides and top of the rear of the vehicle. (See Appendix for examples.) 6.1.1 Where local culture discourages the use of red and or red orange materials, white retroreflective material with a minimum width of 25

、 mm (1 in.), may be used. If white retroreflective material is used, it is recommended to mount a SMV emblem. (See 6.5 for details.) 6.2 Marking for the front of the vehicle should be 50 mm by 230 mm (2 in. by 9 in.) strips of yellow retroreflective material. At least 2 strips should be placed symme

、trically about the centerline as widely spaced as practicable on the front of the machine. (See Appendix for examples.) 6.2.1 Where local culture discourages the use of yellow material, white retroreflective material with a minimum width of 25 mm (1 in.), may be used. 6.3 Marking for the side of the

、 vehicle should be 50 mm by 230 mm (2 in. by 9 in.) strips of yellow retroreflective material. A minimum of two strips should be symmetrically spaced and mounted along each side of the vehicle frame. If the vehicle is equipped with a tongue or shaft that is visible on the outside of the animal, at l

、east one additional yellow strip should be placed on the outside of the tongue or shaft. (See Appendix for examples.) 6.3.1 Where local culture discourages the use of yellow material, white retroreflective material with a minimum width of 25 mm (1 in.), may be used. 6.4 Yellow or white retroreflecti

、ve material may be attached to the harness, to the animals legs, or both to enhance visibility. 6.5 A slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem conforming to ASAE S276 should be placed on the rear of the vehicle. (See Appendix for examples.) 6.6 Mount an orange flag or alternative aerial device on the left s

、ide (as viewed from the rear). The bottom edge of the flag should be between 4 and 7 feet above the surface of the road. Two flags are also acceptable. Additional retroreflective tape may be wrapped around the shaft to enhance visibility. ANSI/ASAE EP576.2 OCT2012 Copyright American Society of Agric

、ural and Biological Engineers 7 Rear Pony Cart View RETROREFLECTIVE TAPE: Outline the edges of the vehicle and shafts with white retroreflective tape OR alternate fluorescent orange & retroreflective red materials where local cultures allow. Tape may be placed on the seat back for best visibility. S

、tripes of tape should be at least 2 inches 9 inches when possible. SMV EMBLEM: Mount a slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem conforming to ASAE S276 on the rear of the vehicle with bottom edge 2 to 4 feet above the surface of the road. FRONT HEADLIGHTS: On the front of the cart, mount two white headlight

、s between 2 and 4 feet above the surface of the road. Use two lights of the same shape (round, square or rectangle) to maintain a symmetrical appearance. Frontlights indicate the direction of travel for passing vehicles. HAZARD FLASHERS: Two flashing amber lights should be visible from the front and

、 rear, mounted 2 to 4 feet above the road surface. FLAG: Mount an orange flag or alternative aerial device on the left side (as viewed from the rear). The bottom edge of the flag should be between 4 and 7 feet above the surface of the road. Two flags are also acceptable. Additional retroreflective tape may be wrapped around the shaft to enhance visibility.
