This FOTP is part of the series of test procedures included within Re

25、commended Standard EIA/TIA-455. NOTE : This FOTP was originally published in EIA-455-104 as FOTP-104. 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Intent, The intent of this test is to determine the effects of repeated flexions on a fiber optic cable. These flexions may be performed at some specified temperature. 1.2 Scope.

26、 This procedure is designed to measure permanent and/or transient optical transmittance changes and requires the assessment of any damage occurring to other cable components. 1.3 Failure Modes- Potential failure modes for this test include, but are not limited to: a. Loss of optical continuity, eith

27、er during or at the end of the test, Degradation transmittance performance, c. Fiber breakage or other physical damage, a. Other failure modes as may be stated in the Detail Specification. APPARATUS The following apparatus and equipment is required to perform this test: 3.1 Device For Verifying The Number of Transmitting Fibers. If measurements of change

31、 in optical transmittance are not required, use any any suitable equipment to determine the number of transmitting fibers. (Note: Wherever the term, “number of transmitting fibers,“ appears in this procedure, it shall be understood to mean the number of fibers displaying optical continuity.) 3.2 Dev

If measurements of change in optical transmittance are required, use a suitable device for measuring optical power transmission as described in FOTP-20. Operating wavelengths and modulation methods shall be as specified in the Detail Specification. In p

34、 a suitable flexing device, such as illustrated in Figure 1. The flexing arm shall have an adjustable clamp or fixture to permit holding the cable securely during the entire test. The clamping fixture shall not crush the optical fibers during the test. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specif

It is recommended that there be 1 to 3 mm of clearance on each side between the cable and the sheaves in order

39、to prevent undue friction on the cable at the flexing point. Use sheaves as shown in Figure 1 and as listed in Table I. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, the following default values apply: 3.4.1 For all except U.S. Military applications, use sheaves per Table I, Sheave Designa

If flexing under specific tensile load is required, it shall be specified in the Detail Specification. When used, weights (mass) shall be attached to or suspended

42、 from the cable under test. The minimum load to be applied is usually dependent upon the outside diameter (and, to some extent, the stiffness) of the cable under test. Increase the load if necessary to ensure full quadrant contact of the cable with the sheaves during testing. Unless otherwise specif
