    13、this standard to be a valuabletool for accurate and rapid identification of selected industrial respiratory protective devices byexamination of their respective canisters, cartridges or filters. Readily recognizable colors are specified for canister, cartridge or filter container or labels. Color sp

    14、ecification utilizing the Munsellsystem will result in uniform cartridge, canister, filter container and label colors among respiratormanufacturers. American National Standards Committee Z88.7 on Color-Coding of Air-PurifyingRespirator canisters, cartridges and filters, under whose jurisdiction this

    15、 standard was developed,has the following scope:The requirements of this standard apply to the identification of air-purifying respirator canisters,cartridges and filters used to provide respiratory protection against gases, vapors and/or particles.These requirements apply to cartridges and canister

    16、s used in industrial or healthcare facilities,office buildings, mines, ships, confined spaces, wildland fire-fighting or other similar locations.These requirements do not apply to canisters, cartridges or filters used on:a) aviation respiratorsb) military respiratorsThis standard was originally publ

    17、ished as American National Standard K13.1-1973. Changes weremade in the 2001 revision of this standard to reflect currently available color specifications and toeliminate reference to labeling requirements.This latest revision incorporates some of the colors used internationally in an attempt to har

    18、monizewith current and future European and International standards. It also specifies color for Chemical,Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) canisters, not yet developed at the time of the lastrevision. New technology and research continues to change this field and it is hoped that future ve

    19、rsions ofthe standard will reflect this growth in knowledge. Suggestions for improvement are welcome. Definitions4.1 Air-purifying element: a filter, s

    27、orbent,catalyst or combination thereof, whichremoves specific contaminants from theair passing through it.4.2 Air-purifying respirator: A respirator inwhich ambient air is passed through anair-purifying element(s) that remove(s)the contaminant(s). Air is passed throughthe air-purifying element(s) by

    28、 means ofthe breathing action or by a blower.4.3 canister/cartridge: A container encap-sulating an air-purifying element.4.4 CMYK: A subtractive color model, oftenreferred to as process color or four colorprocess, used in color printing. CMYKrefers to the four inks used in most colorprinting: Cyan,

    29、Magenta, Yellow, and Key(black).4.5 High efficiency filter: A filter withgreater than 99.97% efficiency, and suit-able for any aerosol.4.6 Filter: An air-purifying element whichremoves both solid and liquid aerosols. 4.7 Munsell Notation: A means for specify-ing the colors of objects.(1)5.     30、 Each respirator canister, cartridge, filtercontainer or canister or cartridge labelshall be a distinctive color as indicated inTable 1. 1. PurposeThe purpose of this standard is to estab-lish a system of marking air-purifying res-pirator canisters, cartridges and filtercontainers by means of colors

    31、 in orderto:1. Facilitate rapid identification of thecanisters, cartridges, and filters byusers.2. Ensure color consistency amongrespirator manufacturers.2. ScopeThe requirements of this standard applyto the identification of air-purifying respi-rator canisters, cartridges and filtersused to provide

    32、 respiratory protectionagainst gases, vapors or particles. Theserequirements apply to canisters, car-tridges, and any high efficiency filters,whether encapsulated or un-encapsulat-ed, used as components of air-purifyingrespirators. These requirements do notapply to and shall not be used to identifyc

    33、anisters, cartridges or filters for:a) aviation respirators, b) military respirators,c) non-high efficiency filters, or d) un-encapsulated respirator filters(e.g. filtering facepieces) except forhigh efficiency filters. Users of this standard should be awarethat regulatory agencies might haverequire

ApplicationThe manufacturers of air-purifying respi-rator canisters, cartridges or filters whichfall within the scope of this standard shallverify that all of these canisters, American National Standard Color Coding of Air Purifying Respirator Canisters,

Do not distribute.25.2 Where protection is for more than onecontaminant class, except CBRN, eachof the applicable colors shall be used inreadily discernible stripes such that themarkings meet the req

    36、uirement of clause5.6.5.3 Where respirator canisters, cartridges orfilter containers are colored to conform tothis standard, each color shall be visibleat a distance of one meter.5.4 All colors used shall conform to theMunsell Notation. 5.5 Where labels are used to conform to thisstandard, the canis

    37、ter, cartridge or filtercontainer shall be black, gray, transpar-ent; or may be left in its natural metalliccolor. 5.6 Each color shall be readily visible from adistance of one meter when the respira-tor using the air-purifying element isworn. 5.7 Labels used for color-coding shall beresistance to c

    38、hange such as, but notlimited to, peeling, fading, bleaching andblistering. In the event that the color-coded label is separated from the canis-ter, cartridge or filter, evidence shallremain to alert users that the color-codedlabel is missing.5.8 The color coating or colored materialused shall be re

    39、sistant to change suchas, but not limited to, chipping, peeling,scaling, blistering, and fading, and to theeffects of ordinary atmospheres to whichthey may be exposed under normal orordinary conditions of storage and use.6.
