、age Mark (Blip) Used in Image Mark Retrieval Systems, This standard has been revised by the Micrographic Encoding Committee of the Association for Information and Image Management to include multisize image marks, their dimensions, location, and general use. This standard specifically describes the

、characteristics of the image mark (formerly known as blip mark) on 16 mm film. It defines the use of the image marks in retrieval, and discusses the film control codes in the appendix. There are currently only two film control codes in general com- mercial use. Listed are the general characteristics

、 but not included are the specific codes or their control which is available from the manufacturers. Suggestions for improvement gained from the use of this standard are welcome. They should be sent to the Chairman, AIIM Standards Board, Association for Infor- mation and Image Management, ll00 Wayne

General Film control codes are being used in some readers to veri the roll identification, set reader parameters, and provide information relative to both the image

、s on the rol and reader set up. A film control code is a machine readable code used to identi the film information and control, or modify, retrieval terminal operation. Film control code consists of a start code, data code, and stop code encoded on film as various combinations of alternate marks and

、 spaces. 2. Code Characteristics 2.1 Start Codes. Start codes should consist of one or two very large image marks, greater than 8.7 mm (0.38 inches), with a space separation equal or greater than a small im- age mark. 2.2 Stop Codes. Stop codes should consist of one or two very large image marks gre

、ater than 8.7 mm (0.38 inches), with a prior space separation equal or greater than a small image mark. 2.3 Data Code. The data code shall be placed between the start and stop codes and should consist of marks and spaces whose length is the same as small, medium, and large image marks. 2.4 Code Mark

、 Width. Code mark width across the film should be the same as image mark width, see Figure 2 and Table 1. 2.5 Code Mark Density. The density and measurement criteria should be the same as for image marks, see Figure 6. 2.6 Code Polarity. The polarity of the code marks should be the same as that of t

、he image marks. 2.7 Code Channel. The channels reserved for film con- trol code should extend 2.16 mm (0.085 inches) from each edge of the film and should be the same as image mark channels, see Figure 2 and Table 1. 3. Code Sequence 3.1 General. In Channel A, when the film is moved for- ward, the s

、tart code should be first followed by the data code, then followed by the stop code. In Channel B, when the film is moved forward in the reader, the sequence should be reversed with the stop code first, foilowed by the data code, then followed by the start code. 3.2 Retrieval Set Up Code. When used,

、 the retrieval set up code may contain information required to set reader search parameters: to verify film roll number, to set the search program number, and/or to set other parameters relative to the roll identification, image mark polarity, and image position offset. 3.3 Image Address Code. When

、used, the image address code may contain information required to set reader ad- dress registers. 4. Splices When used, a splice should not conflict with the dimensions of the film control code or image marks. NOTE: Colored splices, including silver metallic, opaque gray, and white may confuse the image counting sensor. 5 AIIM MSB BB m 1012348 0000561 7 m ANSI/AIIM MS8-1988 by Association for Information and Image Management 1100 Wayne Avenue, Suite 1100 Silver Spring, MD 20910 3011587-8202 ISBN 0-89258-126-3 Printed in the United States of America
