METHOD OF CONTROL OF INTERCHANGEABILITY AND MASTERING POLICY IN AIRFRAME MANUFACTURING 1) This document is designed to cover the basic requirements to which each participating manufacturing unit must conf

、orm to achieve and maintain interchangeability on any joint aircraft manufacturing project. INTRODUCTION It is restricted to geometrical interchangeablity and its purpose is to: Define this interchangeability in practice. Describe the means to achieve this and inspect it. State the factors for decid

、ing on the various possible methods. Give the procedures in general use for the associate companies. To obtain a uniform appellation of terms a list of relevant definitions is included. The basic functions of those departments responsible for the engineering control and verification of interchangeab

、ility within a manufacturing unit are also described. Essential documentation, interchangeability media requirements and quality assurance procedures are specified together with the necessary inputs which the authority would require to successfully co-ordinate the overail interchangeability content

、of any given project. The satisfaction of interchangeability requirements is a planned and integrated function of design engineering, production engineering, tool design and product assurance activities. 2) DEFINITIONS 2.0 . For the purpose of the subject treated in this chapter it is assumed that,

、after installation of the interchangeable or replaceable item into the aircraft and after possible adjustment for which means have been incorporated into the item or its adjoining structure, no unacceptable differences are discernable in geometric and functional performance, maintainability, reliabi

、lity, etc. 2.1. Classes of Interchangeability 2.1.1. interchangeability required by contract or in use The aircraft design specifications define the contractual requirements for interchangeability. It applies to items that are removable and likely to be replaced, on the aircraft by the user during o

、peration, whether military or civil. There are three kinds of contractual interchangeability. 5. 34、 hhnufacturing interchangeability This applies to items which are not intended to be changed during the life of the aircraft and are therefore not listed in the contract specifications. Its purpose is simply to help the manufacturers assembly operations. It is defined in the delivery specification b

、etween the manufacturers. There are two kinds of manufacturing interchangeability. Manufacturing Interchangeability (Class MI) An interface between two aircraft components comes in class MI when the joining of those two components requires only the application of attaching means and possibly of adju

、stment. No further operations such as cutting, filing, reaming, etc. shall be required. Manufacturing Repiaceability (Class MR) Aninterface between two aircraft components comes in class MR when the joining of those two components requires adaptation of one or of both aircraft components to each oth

、er. An interface definition has to be laibdown specifying the.way in which means for adaptation have to be provided. (Trim allowances, predrilled or undersize holes etc.) The condition of supply must be defined. Copyright Association Europeene des Constructeurs de Materiel Aerospatial Provided by IH

Media to guarantee interchangeability To produce an interchangeable item a family of tools for the item and the structure to which the item assembl

、es is necessary. This family of tools must be compatible to a degree which will guarantee that when components are produced from this family a satisfactory assembly within the specified tolerances will be obtained. Dependent on the assembly tolerances and configuration the necessary degree of compat

、ibility of the family of tools can be achieved in any one of three ways:. a) . Pyrely by dimensions b) By physical application of the production tools to each other c) By the use of tooling facilities to correlate the family of tools and where necessary check the finished item and/or structure to wh

、ich it assembles. Such tooling facilities are called interchangeability media as distinct from production tools. They are thus solely facilities to correlate the family of tools during their manufacture, to ensure that the standard is maintained on the tools during a production run, and/or to check

、the finished component. There are three types of interchangeability media as defined below, 2.2.1. Control Master Gauge A control master gauge simulating the interchangeability features of a specific component is a tooling facility representing that component and co-ordinated with the control master

、 gauge!of its complementary component. When there is a control master gauge it defines the interchangeability standard in question and is mandatory. The control master gauge is used for the co-ordination and inspection of the master tooling gauge representing the complementary component and of the c

、hecking gauge of the specific component when the checking gauge is in the same plant. For a given interchangeability item only one control master gauge can exist. A control master gauge normally remains static in the company responsible for its manufacture. 2.2.2. Master Tooling Gauge A master tooli

、ng gauge simulating the interchangeability features of a specific component is a tooling facility representing that component, and co-ordinated with either the control master gauge (if existing) or the master tooling gauge of its complementary component (if existing). The master tooling gauge is use

、d for the adjustment, co-ordination and inspection of production tooling and of checking gauges. In exceptional cases the master tooling gauge for a specific component may be used as a checking gauge for the complementary component Multiple master tooling gauges may exist for any one component where

、 there are multiple sources of production; Copyright Association Europeene des Constructeurs de Materiel Aerospatial Provided by IHS under license with AECMANot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-AECMA CTI/74/328Z 74 W LOL231L 0000219 7 2.2.3. Checking Gau

、ge A checking gauge for the interchangeability features of a specific component is an inspection facility representing the complementary component, and co-ordinated with either the control master gauge or the master tooling gauge of the specific component, if these exist. The checking gauge represen

、ts the complementary component such that the ailocation of tolerances results in the acceptance or rejection of the component being checked. Multiple checking gauges may exist for any one component where there are multiple sources of production. 2.2.4. Achieving Interchangeability without the use of interchangeability media - matching of production tools Any
