Precautions7.1 Gasoline is used in some of the following tests. Cau-tionary

、 standards for handling and disposal of hazardousmaterials should be observed. Containers containing gasolineshould not be opened in the presence of open flame or othersources of ignition.8. Test Methods8.1 Stability TestFill a sample container with water at 236 2C (75 6 3.6F) to its rated capacity

、by volume. Secure theclosures as in transportation and storage. Place the containerwith its base on an inclined plane forming an angle of 0.35 rad(20) with the horizontal. During the test, rotate the containerabout its vertical axis so that stability can be checked with thesample facing any directio

、n.8.2 Handle StrengthFill a sample container with anequivalent weight of water at 23 6 2C (75 6 3.6F) to itsrated gasoline capacity. Secure the closures as in transportationand storage. One end of a 9.5 mm (0.375 in) diameter manilarope about 2 m (6.5 ft) long shall be secured to a rigid point ofsus

、pension and the other end attached so as to distribute theload across the container handle. Suspend the container fromthe rope for 1 min then raise it 305 mm (12 in.) from thesuspended position and allow it to fall freely.8.3 Drop Strength TestFill the container to its nominalcapacity with water at

、23 6 2C(756 5 F) and secure theclosures. Drop it, free fall, onto a flat, solid surface. Makedrops in the following sequence: one drop on the bottom, onedrop on a bottom corner, and one drop on a side. The distanceof fall shall be 1.8 m (6 ft). Make the same tests with anothercontainer filled with a

、 blend of 50 % glycol and 50 % waterTABLE 1 Torque RequirementsOuter Diameter of Closure Closing Torque, Nm (lbfin.)Less than 51 mm (2 in.) 2.8 (25)51 mm (2 in.) and greater 5.6 (50)F852 082and with both the container and its contents cooled to 18 6 1C (0 6 2 F). For these latter tests, the distance

、 of fall shall be1.2 m (4 ft).NOTE 1The location of the spout is considered to be the front of thecontainer. The side is considered to be approximately 90 to either left orright of the nozzle area.8.4 Internal Pressure Test:8.4.1 Hydrostatic Pressure TestFill the container to itstotal volume with wa

、ter at 23 6 3C (75 6 5F) and secure theclosures. Increase the internal pressure to a gage pressure of138 kPa (20 psi) and maintain for 2 min. Conduct the same testwith a container filled to its total volume with water at 60 63C (140 6 5F). For plastic containers, apply the pressure byinserting and s

、ecuring an adaptor through a drilled hole in aflat, heavy section of the container wall, and not on a pinch-offor parting line. For metal containers, the pressure can beapplied through a fill or pour closure.8.5 Aging TestPerform the following two tests. In bothtests, determine tensile strength in a

、ccordance with the condi-tions outlined in Test Method D638 using five specimens anda crosshead speed of 50 mm (2 in.) per min.8.5.1 Test 1Test the specimen for 2000 h in accordancewith Procedure B of Practice D2565 using Type B or BHapparatus, or for 1400 h in accordance with Practice G23 usinga Ty

、pe E carbon-arc weathering device (Note 2). The test cyclefor each method shall consist of 102 min of light followed by18 min of light and spray. If Practice G23 is used, theblackbody temperature shall be 62.8C (145F). In cases ofdisagreement, Practice D2565 shall be the referee method.NOTE 2Limited

、 data indicate that carbon-arc exposure is much moresevere than xenon-arc exposure, and therefore, less exposure time isrequired when using the carbon-arc equipment.8.5.2 Test 2Test the specimen for 60 days in accordancewith Practice D794 except that the oven temperature shall be87 6 2C (189 6 3.6F)

、.8.6 Permeability TestFill the container to its rated capac-ity with Reference Fuel B (70 % isooctane and 30 % toluene byvolume), as defined by Test Method D471 and secure theclosures. Weigh the container accurately to the nearest 5 g(0.01 lb). After storage for 30 days at 236 2C (75 6 3.6F),reweigh

、 the container and calculate the weight loss.8.7 Gasoline Resistance Test:8.7.1 Visual TestUpon completion of the permeability testin 8.6, empty the container and cut apart in a manner to allowvisual inspection of all interior surfaces.8.7.2 Immersion TestCondition at least 30 specimens, taken from u

、ntested container, measuring about 125 mm (5 in.)by 16 mm (0.625 in.) at 23 6 2C (75 6 3.6F) for 18 h.Immerse specimens in each of the following solutions at 38 62C (100 6 3.6F). Use the remaining ten specimens as acontrol:8.7.2.1 ASTM Reference Fuel C (mixtures of 50 % isooc-tane and 50 % toluene b

、y volume), and8.7.2.2 Blend of ASTM Reference Fuel A (isooctane andASTM Reference Oil No. 3, considered to be representative oflow aniline point automotive lubricating oils) as defined byTest Method D471 in a ratio of 16 to 1 by volume.8.7.2.3 Following exposure for 30 days, remove ten speci-mens fr

、om each solution and test to determine tensile yieldstrength in accordance with Test Method D638 using a cross-head speed of 50 mm (2 in.) per min.8.8 Stress Cracking TestTest two containers in accordancewith Procedure B of Test Method D2561, except do not exposethe outside of the containers to the

、stress cracking agent.8.9 Corrosion Resistance TestFill six container samples totheir nominal capacity with water. Secure the closures as intransportation and storage. Test the containers in accordancewith Practice B117. Expose the containers to a spray of 5 %salt solution for 21 days. Then allow th

、em to dry for4hatroom temperature.8.10 Container Material Flammability TestDetermine theresistance of the container filled with water to a momentaryexposure to heat and flame in accordance with 8.10.1 and8.10.2.NOTE 3These test methods should be used to measure and describethe properties of material

、s, products, or assemblies in response to heat andflame under controlled laboratory conditions and should not be used todescribe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, orassemblies under actual fire conditions.8.10.1 Test 1Fill a container completely with water at 236 2C (7

、5 6 3.6F). Adjust a 9.5 mm (38-in.) diameter bunsenburner, using natural gas having a calorific value of approxi-mately 37 MJ/m3(1000 Btu/ft3) so that the outer blue flame isapproximately 25 mm (1 in.) in length and the inner blue coneis approximately 9.5 mm (38 in.) long. The temperature of theflam

、e just above the inner cone shall be a minimum of 930C(1700F) and the temperature of the flame 19 mm (34 in.)above the burner shall be a minimum of 288C (550F). Tilt theburner about 0.31 radians (18) from the normal 1.57 radians(90) impingement and hold the tip of the burner 19 mm (34in.) away from the container for 75 s. Test the container on theside, bottom and any corner. Examine for leaks. If the design ofthe container is such that it cannot be filled completely withwater, apply the flam
