    7、iii Introduction ThispartofISO12103specifiesarangeofinorganictestdusts, manufacturedfromfusedaluminiumoxide,primarilyusedforevaluatingthe performanceofbothfuelandlubricatingoilfiltersforinternalcombustion engines,generallybygravimetricmethods. ThispartofISO12103istobeusedinconjunctionwithanumberofot

Thesedustareusedinconjunctionwithvarioustestproceduresdesignedtoevaluate,ingeneral,fueland lubricatingoilfiltersforinternalcombustionenginesbygravimetricmethods. Thedustsmayalsobeusedforanumberofotherapplications,suchasforabrasiontests,wheredistinct,known particle

    10、sizedistributionsofhard,abrasivematerialarerequired. 2 Testdustdesignation 2.1 Designation These“M”seriestestdustsareavailableinfivestandardgrades 1) ,whicharedesignatedasfollows: ISO12103M1fornominalparticlesize:5 mm ISO12103M2fornominalparticlesize:7 mm ISO12103M3fornominalparticlesize:14 mm ISO12

    11、103M4fornominalparticlesize:30 mm ISO12103M5fornominalparticlesize:55 mm 2.2 Generaldescription Allfivegradesofdustaremadefromfusedaluminiumoxide(Al 2 O 3 )havingadensityof3960kg/m 3 .Thebulk densityofthematerial,whichvarieswithgrade,isintherange500kg/m 3 to2300kg/m 3 .Thecolourofthematerial alsovar

    13、zedistributionofeachofthefivegradesofdustshallconformtothelimitsshowninfigures1to5and tables1to5,whendeterminedbytheAndreasensedimentationmethod(seeannexC). Itshouldbenotedthatothermethodsofparticlesizeanalysis,suchaslightscattering(laserdiffraction)orthe electricalsensingzonemethod(Coulterprinciple

    14、),ofinsolubledustsinliquidsuspensions,willgivedifferentresults tothoseobtainedbytheAndreasensedimentationmethod. Whenthesedifferentmethodsofanalysisareemployedbyatestlaboratory,thelaboratoryshouldgeneratesuitable correlationdatabetweenthemethodbywhichthesepowdersaresuppliedtoconform(Andreasensedimen

    15、tation) andbythemethodofanalysisadoptedbythetestlaboratory. AnexampleisgiveninannexAofthedifferenceintheparticlesizedistributionrangeofgradeM2dust(themost commonlyusedofthefivegradesofdust)obtainedbythelaserdiffractionmethodfromarangeofdustsamples representingmaterialfromboththeminimumandmaximumlimi
