Preconditioning is not necessary.8.2 For specimens to be tested after drycleaning orlaundering, condition only if the same specimens will be testedfor dimensional changes. In this case,

、 condition in the standardatmosphere for testing textiles as directed in Practice D1776prior to marking. Refer to AATCC TM135 or TM158.9. Specimen Preparation9.1 For specimens to be tested after drycleaning, run threecomplete drycleaning cycles following the procedures de-scribed in AATCC TM158.9.2

Cutone bond strength specimen from each drycleaned or launderedspecimen.10. Test Conditions10.1 Bond

、strength tests may be made on the fabric asbonded or laminated, or after the three specified drycleaningcycles or after the five specified laundering cycles. These testsalso may be made on dry specimens (conditioned in thestandard atmosphere for testing textiles), or on wet specimens(saturated with

、perchlorethylene at room temperature follow-ing the drycleaning tests or saturated with water at roomtemperature following the laundering tests).10.2 Alternatively, following the drycleaning tests, wetstrength-of-bond tests may be made on flame-laminated fabricswith the specimens saturated in water

、instead of perchloreth-ylene. An interlaboratory test run in 1975 showed no signifi-cant differences between perchlorethylene and water in wettests on flame-laminated fabrics. However, there were signifi-cant differences on adhesive-bonded fabrics. Therefore, wateris not a suitable substitute for pe

、rchlorethylene in wet tests onthese fabrics.11. Procedure for Bonded and Fused Fabrics11.1 Manually separate the two layers of fabric along the76.2 mm (3 in.) width of each test specimen for a distance ofapproximately 25 mm (1 in.) in the direction of the specimenlength.11.2 Set the lower clamp at a

、 distance of 25 mm (1 in.) fromthe upper clamp. Secure the separated face fabric of a testspecimen in the upper clamp of the tensile testing machine insuch a way that the longitudinal axis of the specimen forms aright angle with the closed clamping surface. Secure theseparated backing fabric in the

、lower clamp of the machine insuch a way that the longitudinal axis of the specimen forms aright angle with the closed jaws of the lower clamp.11.3 If the indicating scale on the machine is provided witha pawl and ratchet mechanism, disengage the mechanism topermit readings of variable force when the

、 machine is placed inoperation.11.4 Operate the machine at a pulling speed of 5.1 6 0.2mm/s (12 6 0.5 in./min).11.5 Estimate the bond strength to the nearest 140 mN (0.5ozf) as the average of at least the five highest and the fivelowest peak loads of resistance per inch of width, registered for100 m

、m (4 in.) of delamination.11.6 Repeat the operations described in 11.2 11.5 for eachof the remaining two test specimens.12. Procedure for Laminated Fabrics12.1 Manually separate the face fabric from the foam alongthe 76.2-mm (3-in.) width of each test specimen for a distanceof approximately 25 mm (1

、 in.) in the direction of the specimenlength.12.2 Set the lower clamp at a distance of 25 mm (1 in.) fromthe upper clamp. Secure the separated face fabric of a testspecimen in the upper clamp of the tensile testing machine insuch a way that the longitudinal axis of the specimen forms aright angle wi

、th the closed clamping surface. Secure theseparated foam or foam and backing fabric in the lower clampof the machine in such a way that the longitudinal axis of thespecimen forms a right angle with the closed jaws of the lowerclamp.12.3 Proceed as instructed in 11.3 11.6.12.4 If foam is laminated to

、 a backing fabric, retain each testspecimen from 12.3 after the bond strength has been deter-mined for face to foam. Manually separate the backing fabricfrom the foam as instructed in 12.1 except that the manualseparation should be made at the opposite end of the testspecimen separated for the face

、fabric-to-foam test.12.5 Set the lower clamps at a distance of 25 mm (1 in.)from the upper clamp. Secure the separated foam or foam andface fabric of a test specimen in the upper clamp of the tensiletesting machine in such a way that the longitudinal axis of thespecimen forms a right angle with the

、closed clamping surface.Secure the separated backing fabric in the lower clamp of themachine in such a way that the longitudinal axis of thespecimen forms a right angle with the closed jaws of the lowerclamp.12.6 Proceed as instructed in 11.3 11.6.12.7 Examine both sides of the foam on the test spec

、imensafter testing for bond strength. Determine whether the foamportion ruptured during delamination allowing some foam toadhere to either fabric surface. If this has occurred, make thenotation “foam tear” for that test specimen for the side or sideswhere “foam tear” occurred. If “foam tear” occurs

、on only oneside of one test specimen, disregard this result and report theaverage bond strength for that side of the remaining twospecimens. If “foam tear” occurs on the same side of two orthree specimens, report the bond strength for that side as “foamtear.”12.8 In the event it is impossible to separate manually thefoam from either the face or the backing fabric as instructed in12.1 and 12.4 without rupturing the foam, report the bondstrength for the side or sides where this occurs as “foam tear.”13. Report13.1 State that the tests were made as directed inA
