、for use in the investigation of sealing compound products supplied in liquid, semiliquid, or heavy paste (stick) form, where the product is intended to make threaded metal pipe jointstight against leakage. These products are evaluated when applied in accordance with the manufacturersinstructions, to

、male threads of metal pipe assemblies. The products are rated for use in equipmentintended to handle gasoline, gasoline/ethanol blends, diesel fuel, biodiesel/diesel fuel, biodiesel, naphtha, benzene, kerosene, petroleum oils, natural gas, propane, or butane as specified by the manufacturer.1.2 The i

、nvestigation includes tests for the sealing effectiveness of the product, and tests to determinethat the product does not cause significant corrosion of common metals or adversely affect the electricalcontinuity of pipe assemblies on which it is used. The investigation also includes analytical tests

、 requiredfor product identification purposes.1.3 This outline of investigation does not cover the classification of the product in regard to itsflammability, the toxicity of the product or its vapors due to flammability or the effect of normal atmosphericconditions on the product while in storage or

、 in use.1.4 If requested, the sealing of threaded joints in pipe sizes larger than 2 inches may be investigatedusing appropriate adaptation of tests described in Section68.Tests for uses other than those indicatedare not within the scope of these requirements.2 General2.1 Product application instruc

、 with tapered pipe threads cut in accordance with ASMEB1.20.1 NPT tapered pipe thread.6.1.3 The mating male and female thread patterns are to be checked for evidence of damage to threadsand with regard to tolerance with ring and plug gauges manufactured in accordance with ASME B1.20.1.Only pipe and

、fittings that show no significant evidence of thread damage and that comply with ASMEB1.20.1 tolerances shall be used to construct assemblies.6.1.4 Prior to assembly, thread patterns are to be cleaned thoroughly with a suitable degreasing solventto the extent that all traces of oil, grease, dirt, or

、 rust are removed. Then the assembly shall be allowedto air dry at room temperature.6.2 Construction of assemblies6.2.1 The test assemblies are to be constructed for each end-use application using one tee of the largestpipe size required for testing, a reducing bushing, pipe nipple, bell reducer to

、e of leakage as described in 6.3.6.6.3.2 For gasoline and gasoline/ethanol blend applications up to 10 percent ethanol, the assembly is tobe filled to a predetermined level approximately 1 inch (25.4 mm) from the top of the assembly with ameasured amount of ASTM Reference Fuel H and connected in the

、 vertical position to a header. Theassembly shall be maintained in the vertical position throughout the test period. The header is to beprovided with an air-pressure gauge and connected through pressure reducers to a compressed air line. The pressure reducer is to be adjusted to supply a pressure of

、30 psig (210 kPa) to the header and pipeassembly.6.3.3 If leakage is observed at any of the joints within 24 hours and the product is the type that can beretightened, the assembly shall be disconnected from the header, emptied of fuel, and the leaking jointsretightened to the prescribed torque with

、care taken not to disturb the remaining joints. The retightenedassembly shall then be refilled with test fuel, connected to the header, and the pressure reapplied. Ifleakage is not stopped with this further tightening, or if the product is of such a composition that jointsshould not be retightened a

、fter the product has cured, unacceptable performance shall be recorded andtesting shall be discontinued.6.3.4 If no initial leakage is observed during the 24-hour period following sealing or re-sealing, thepressure is to be maintained at 30 psig (210 kPa) for a total of 90 days, during which time pe

、ence Fuel H.For E85 applications (ethanol/gasoline blends from 0 to 85 percent ethanol), the product shall beevaluated in accordance with 6.3.1 6.3.6 in two separate assemblies, one filled with E25a test fluid andthe other filled with E85a test fluid in place of ASTM Reference Fuel H. The formulatio

、n of these test fluidsis described in E25a and E85a Test Fluids, Supplement SA. To establish an E85 rating, the product shallcomply with the maximum fuel loss requirement with both test fluids. Acceptable test performance withrespect to testing with E25a test fluid is considered to cover also the su

、 biodiesel), the product shallbe evaluated in accordance with 6.3.1 6.3.6 using FB25a test fluid in place of ASTM Reference Fuel H.For B99.9 - B100 applications (biodiesel), the product shall be evaluated in accordance with 6.3.1 6.3.6using B100a test fluid in place of ASTM Reference Fuel H. The for

、mulation of these test fluids is describedin B20 and B99.9/B100 Test Fluids, Supplement SB. Acceptable test performance with respect to testingwith FB25a is considered also to cover the suitability of the product for use with diesel fuel.6.4 Test for butane and propane applications6.4.1 Pipe assembl

、ies constructed and initially tested as described in 6.1.1 6.2.5 shall not lose morethan 12.6 g of butane or 11.1 g of propane after 42 days when tested as described in 6.4.2 6.4.5.Acceptable test performance with propane is considered also to cover the suitability of this product for usewith natura

、l gas at a pressure not exceeding 100 psig (690 kPa).6.4.2 The sealed assembly shall be cooled in a cold chamber to a temperature of minus 30 to minus 40C(minus 22 to minus 40F) and then filled to about 3/4 capacity with liquefied propane or butane, asrequested by the manufacturer. The assembly shal

、l be sealed with the product using a -inch cap.6.4.3 After being filled and closed, the assembly shall be allowed to stand at room temperature for 4hours or for the minimum time required for the product to cure as specified by the manufacturer, and thenimmersed in water at room temperature. If leaka

、ge is observed at any of the joints within 24 hours, theleaking joints are to be re-tightened, to the prescribed torque, with care taken not to disturb the otherjoints. If the product is of such a composition that joints should not be retightened after the product hascured, the test shall be continu

、ed regardless of whether a seal was achieved.6.4.4 The assembly shall be blotted dry with a towel and allowed to stand at room temperature until aconstant weight is achieved but not more than 4 hours, and then weighed and placed for 28 days in awell-ventilated room maintained at a temperature of 23.

、0 2C (73.4 3.6F). This temperaturecorresponds to a pressure of 116 psig (800 kPa) for propane and 19 psig (131 kPa) for butane. Theassembly shall be weighed at the end of this period, or prior to it if significant leakage is noted. If propaneor butane loss exceeds two-thirds of the total amount perm

、itted to be lost as specified in 6.4.1,unacceptable performance shall be recorded and the tests shall be discontinued.6.4.5 If after 28 days the assembly weight loss is within acceptable limits, the assembly shall be placedin a chamber maintained at a temperature of 48.9 2C (120 3.6F) for 14 days. T

、his temperaturecorresponds to a pressure of 225 psig (1552 kPa) for propane and 56 psig (386 kPa) for butane. At theend of this time or prior to it if significant leakage is noted, the assembly shall be weighed to determinethe loss of propane or butane. If at any point the total propane or butane loss exceeds that specified in6.4.1, the test shall be discontinued.JANUARY 29, 2013 UL 1356 9UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL6.5 Test for 300 psig (2070 kPa) natural
