For purposes of this Standard, these inte

、rfaces are referred to as Type I, Type II and Type III, respectively. This Standard establishes technical and functional requirements for the customer premises equipment known as Network Channel Terminating Equipment (NCTE) . This Standard includes the specification for NCTE interfaces to data termi

、nal equipment (DTE) interface, and end-to-end compatibility and maintenance requirements for connection to PSDS. Throughout this Standard, this equipment will be referred to as the Switched Circuit Data Service Unit (SCDSU) to distinguish it from the general category NCTE. This Standard fills a reco

、gnized need in the telephone industry brought about by the use of equipment supplied by many different manufacturers. It should be useful to anyone engaged in the manufacture of DTE and auxiliary devices, and to those purchasing, operating or using such equipment or devices. As in most standards, tw

、o categories of criteria are specified, mandatory and advisory. The mandatory requirements are designated by the word shall; advisory requirements are designated by the word should, or desirable (which are used interchangeably in this Standard). The mandatory criteria generally apply to safety and p

、rotection, signaling and compatibility; they specify the absolute minimum acceptable requirements in areas such as transmission and equipment parameters and durability. Advisory or desirable criteria represent product goals. In some instances, these criteria are included in an effort to ensure unive

、rsal product compatibility with equipment and facilities operational in statistically small quantities. In other cases, advisory criteria are presented when their attainment will enhance the general performance of the product in all its contemplated applications. Where both mandatory and an advisory

、 level are specified for the same criterion, the advisory level represents a goal currently identifiable as having distinct compatibility or performance advantages, or both,- toward which future designs should strive. This Standard is intended to reflect an ongoing process. The criteria contained in

、 this Standard are subject to revision and updating as warranted by advances in the network or SCDSU technology. SCOPE The requirements in this Standard apply to a device between an end-user DTE and the network interface (NI) of an intraLATA or interLATA carrier generally referred to as NCTE and herein referred t

、o as SCDSU. This Standard includes the framing formats, pulse density requirements, physical, electrical protection, signaling, maintenance, end-to-end compatibility requirements and other necessary criteria for the proper operation of a customers DTE with PSDS. This Standard does not include the re

、quirements for ISDN, but does include the functions required for interworking with ISDN. Specific implementations of PSDS can, and some currently do, offer subrate service over PSDS using rate adaption. This Standard, however, does not address rate adaption for subrate services. Those interested in

、specific implementations of subrate services using rate adaption over PSDS should contact the appropriate manufacturer or service provider. The digital interface areas in Part 68 are currently under consideration. This Standard gives adequate design latitude to comply with current service offerings

、not requiring Part 68 compliance. Should compliance be required in the future, changes to this Standard might be required. DEFINITIONS AND ACRONYMS 3.1 Definitions of Terms This section contains definitions of terms needed for the proper understanding and application of this Standard, which are believed not to be adequately treated elsewhere. BIPOLAR

、(Alternate MARK Inversion) SIGNAL A pseudo-ternary signal conveying binary digits, in which successive llonesll (MARKS, pulses) are of alternating positive (+) and negative (-) polarity, equal in amplitude, and in which the “zerog1 (space, no pulse) is of zero amplitude. BIPOLAR VIOLATION In a bipol

、ar signal, a one (MARK, pulse) that has the same polarity as its predecessor. CUSTOMER INSTALLATION (CI) Equipment and wiring at the customers location on the customer side of the Network Interface. CONTROL MODE IDLE (CMI) that a terminal does not have data to transmit. A bipolar violation sequence

、used to indicate DATA CARRIER Used to indicate that a message is carrying information relevant to the bulk data transfer in the Info nibble. DATA TERMINAL EQUIPMENT (DTE) Data terminal equipment at the customer installation. EXCHANGE CARRIER A telecommunications common carrier franchised to provide

、service in specific geographic areas. IN-BAND Using or involving the information content of an analog or digital channel. INTERLATA Service across a LATA (Local Access Transport Area) boundary. INTRALATA Service within a LATA boundary. JITTER Short term variations of the significant instants of a di

、gital signal from their ideal positions in time. Short term implies that these variations are high frequency (greater than 10 Hz). LCAL ACCESS TRANSPORT AREA (LATA) A local telephone service area with a geographical boundary that is defined by the FCC. LOOPBACK A state of CPE or transmission facilit

、y in which the received signal, or portion thereof, is returned toward the sender.
