、irements for standard test procedures for optical fibers, cables, transducers, sensors, connecting and terminating devices, and other fiber optic components Foreword (This foreword is informative and is not part of this standard.) This document comes from TIA Project No. 3834, and was formulated und

、er the cognizance of TIA TR-42.12 Subcommittee on Optical Fibers and Cables. This document serves as the “umbrella“ for a series of addenda, and is common to all test procedures included within Recommended Standard TIA-455. There are four annexes: two are normative and two are informative. Key words

、: fiber optic tests procedures (FOTPs), atmospheric conditions, metric policy, format, equivalence NOTE - This document was originally published as Recommended Standard TIA/EIA-455. 29、 for standard test procedures for optical fibers, cables, transducers, sensors, connecting and terminating devices, and other fiber optic components 1 Introduction This document, together with its addenda, provides uniform test procedures for testing fiber optic components intended for, or forming a

、 part of, optical communications and data transmission systems. Neither this document, nor its addenda, provide procedures designed for testing fiber optic systems. For test procedures for fiber optic systems or subsystems, refer to the TIA-526 series of documents. The test procedures included in th

、e addenda to this document are designed to satisfy the broadest possible industry requirements; in general, special test methods are not included. In order to adequately cover these broad industry needs, many of the addenda require that some “option designator,“ some test parameter definition, and/o

、r some pass/fail criteria to be specified whenever the addendum is called out. Only in special cases (such as specified DoD requirements) are special test details listed in the addendum in addition to the general requirements. Specific test requirements (including DoD requirements) can, of course, b

、e modified by direction of the Detail Specification so that the particular test can accurately reflect the special test needs (more or less severe than standard) of the component in question. In the event of conflict between the provisions of these test procedures and those of the Detail Specificati

、on, the requirements of the Detail Specification shall govern. In the terminology of IEC Guide 102 this document, together with its addenda, is considered to be a Basic Specification. 2 Normative references The following publications contain provisions which, through reference in this text, may cons

Each individual procedure is identified as an “FOTP“ (for Fiber Optic Test Procedure), followed by a numeric identifying number (e.g., FOTP-1, FOTP-20), and this FOTP number is never changed as long as the procedure remains in force. Each individual addendum is assigned a number which is the sa

For example: FOTP-39 appeared first as TIA/EIA-39 The first revision appears as TIA/EIA-455-39-A The second r

、evision will be TIA/EIA-455-39-B NOTE - There is no such thing as “FOTP-39-A,“ but there is an addendum identified as TIA-455-39-A.ANSI/TIA-455-C 4 4 Application These test procedures have been and are being developed by the various subcommittees and working groups of TIA Engineering Committee TR-42

、 and are approved for use by TIA. Individual component design standards (Detail Specifications) incorporate these standard test procedures to preclude variations in the results that are used to determine if requirements have been attained. The procedures standardize the methods of establishing such

、measurements as attenuation and insertion loss for the purpose of establishing conformance to individual component requirements. Unless otherwise indicated, the procedures are generally applicable to both single fiber and multiple fiber component designs. By appropriate direction of the applicable D

、etail Specification, the test procedures of the published FOTPs may be modified to suit special needs. 4.1 Criteria for FOTPs A fiber optic test procedure (FOTP) is a test or measurement of an attribute that may be specified on individual components. Before a committee adopts an FOTP, it should dete

、rmine that: - The attribute is important to the functional use of the component. - The test or measurement procedure is capable of reasonably consistent interpretation. - The test or measurement procedure is sufficiently reproducible in the context of the expected requirements. When a test or attrib

、ute is perceived to have value beyond component specification yet does not satisfy the above requirements, an informative test method (ITM) following the TSB-62 guideline may be considered. An ITM can be written for some of the following reasons: - The parameter may not be considered useful because

、the performance of the product does not necessarily depend on it, or because there is another parameter that is more appropriate.ANSI/TIA-455-C 5 - The test may have only occasional use for characterizing some feature(s) of a product. - The parameter may be considered useful during the design or redesign phase of a fiber-optic component, but other parameters are better measures of the performance of the end product. - The parameter might be considered useful, but round robins using the particular test have not demonstrated an agreement among measurement facilities. 4.2 M
