(b) Eliminating misunderstandings or confusion of product EIA Generic Specification EIA-5150000 applies to splices intended for use in optical waveguide communications.

26、This EIA Generic Specification will be coordinated with the work of the IEC Subcommittee 86B on Fiber Optic Interconnecting Devices and Passive. Components. 1.0 SCOPE 1.1 This EIA Generic Specification describes the mechanical and optical performance of optical fiber and optical cable splices used i

27、n optical waveguide communications, Excluded are splices unique to the fiber and cable manufacturing processes. Splices covered by this Specification join optical waveguide to optical waveguide or join optical cable to optical cable or both. Optical waveguides joined may be made from glass, plastic,

A Blank Detail Specification, from which a splice m

Splices covered by this Specification fall into two general environmental categories Of protected environment splices, and non-protected environment s

42、500 00 Page 5 necessary terminology is listed below. Splice A splice is a device which permanently or semi- permanently joins optical fibers or optical cables, or both, in a protective manner and maintains fiber or cable structural integrity. The term splice“ refers to the fiber splice, the cable st

43、ructure splice, or the cable splice, and associated hardware. (See Figure 1.) Semi-permanent Splice A splice that can be separated, yet is intended for permanent engagement, as opposed to a connector which is intended for multiple engagements and separ at ions. Fiber Splice A joint whose purpose is

44、to couple optical power between two optical fibers. Cable Structure Splice or Splice Closure A joint whose purpose is to mechanically join two or more optical cables (exclusive of optical fibers). Cable Splice A cable structure splice with an integral fiber splice or splices. Hybrid Splice A splice

45、with fiber splice(s) and electrical conductor splice(s) . A splice part is any of the individual elements of a splice, including index matching fluids and adhesives that become a permanent part of the splice. EIA 5l150000 86 m 3234600 0073057 9 m . 46、Splice A splice designed to be used in a controlled environment inhabited by humans in their work or home activities. 2.3.9 Non-protected Environment Splice A splice designed to be used outside of a protected environment. High altitude, extreme temperatures, and water immersion are examples of a non

47、-protected environment, and special tests may be required for these extreme environments. 2.3.10 Discontinuity Discontinuity is a transient, relatively sharp, short duration interruption or drop-out of the optical signal(s). The purpose of an optical discontinuity test is to confirm that the splice

48、does not induce excessive signal discontinuities when subjected to physical stress tests. 2.3.11 Mechanically Induced Modulation This is the dynamic, amplitude modulation of the optical signal(s) caused by physical stress at a splice. The purpose of a mechanically induced modulation test is to confi

49、rm that a splice does not excessively modulate the optical signal when subjected to physical stress tests. 2.3.12 Ambient Light Susceptibility Ambient light susceptibility is the interference of the optical signal(s) in a splice by ambient optical power incident upon its exterior. The purpose of an ambient light susceptibility test is to confirm the ability of a splice to exclude ambient optical power from its optical signal circuit (s) . 2.3.13 Mechanical Compatibility An inherent characteristic of the fiber, cable and splice existing when the fiber and cable possess the
