This FOTP is part of the series of test procedures included within Recommended

、 Standard EIA/TIA-455. NOTE : This FOTP was originally published in FOTP-16. EIA RS-455-16 as 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose, The purpose of this test is to determine the effects of a controlled salt-laden atmosphere on Fiber Optic device components, finishes and mechanisms. Typical effects of this tes

、t include, but are not limited to: (a) Exposure of base metals, pitting and porosity of finishes. (b) Cracking and delamination of components or finishes, or both. (c) Abnormal nicks, cracks or scratches on finished surfaces that indicate the removal of the normal protective coating. (d) Change of o

、ptical transmittance or insertion loss values, or change of electrical properties. 1.2 Similar Methods. Note that the intent and methodology of this test are essentially the same as those of (a) EIA RS-186-5E (Type II Test), (b) ASTM B 117, (cl MIL-STD-202F, Method 101D, and (d) MIL-STD-l344A, Metho

All of the methods are practically the same, but much of the text is adapted from the two MIL standards (which are essentially identical). Salt solution, maintained. in a salt-solution reservoir that is equipped with means for monitoring and maintaining an adequate solution level, c. Optical or electrical measuring equipment as required by the FOTPs or other instructions as specified for optical or electrical tests. Additional specific apparatus

、details follow. 3.1 Exposure chamber, with racks for supporting specimens. The chamber and all accessories shall be made of material that will not affect the corrosiveness of the fog (e.g., glass, hard rubber, plastic). Wood or plywood shall not be used because they are resiniferous. Materials shall

、 not be used if they contain formaldehyde or phenol in their composition. In addition, all parts that come into contact with test specimens shall be of materials that will not cause electrolytic corrosion. The chamber and accessories shall be so-constructed and arranged that there is no direct impin

The chamber shall be properly vented to prevent pressure buil

、d up and allow uniform distribution of salt spray. The discharge end of the vent shall be protected from strong drafts, which can cause strong air currents in the chamber. 3.2 Chamber-heating means and control. The chamber shall include an appropriate means of heating and of controlling the temperatu

、re within the specified limits for the required period of time. Satisfactory methods for controlling the temperature accurately include, but are not limited to, (a) housing the apparatus in a properly controlled constant temperature room, (b) thoroughly insulating the apparatus and preheating the ai

、r to the proper temperature prior to atomization, and (c) jacketing the apparatus and controlling the temperature of the water or of the air used. The use of immersion heaters for the purpose of maintaining the temperature within the chamber is prohibited. 3.3 Salt Solution. The salt-solution concen

、tration shall be 5 percent. The salt used shall be sodium chloride containing, on the dry basis, not more than 0.1 percent of sodium iodide, and not more than 0.5 percent of total impurities. The 5-percent solution shall be prepared by dissolving 5 ? 1 parts (by weight) of salt in 95 parts (by weigh

、t) of distilled or other water. Water used in the preparation of the solution shall contain not more than 200 parts per million of total solids. The solution shall be kept free from solids by filtration using a filter as described in 3.5. The solution shall be adjusted to, and maintained at, a speci

、fic gravity in accordance with Figure 3. The pH of the solution shall be maintained between 6.5 and 7.2, when measured at a temperature of 35+2*C. Before adjusting the pH, gently boil a sample of the solution (e.g., 10 milliliters in a pyrex beaker) for 30 to 60 seconds to remove the CO2, then cool

、to the specified temperature prior to measuring the sample solution pH. Only diluted chemically pure grade hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide shall be used to adjust the pH. Make pH measurements electrometrically at 25OC using a glass electode with a saturated potassium-chloride bridge: alternati

An appropriate reservoir for the salt-solution shall be included in the apparatus, together with a means for monitoring the level of salt-solution in the reservoir to assure that an adequate level is mainta

、ined. 3.5 Solution Filter. A filter fabricated of noncorrosive materials similar to that shown in Figure 1 shall be provided in the supply line and immersed in the reservoir in a manner such as shown in Figure 2. 3.6 Atomizers, The atomizer or atomizers used shall be of such design and construction

、as to produce a finely divided, wet, dense fog. The atomizing nozzle(s) shall be made of a material that does not react with the salt solution. 3.7 Air supply. The compressed air entering the atomizer(s) shall be free from all impurities such as oil and dirt. Means shall be provided to humidify and

、warm the compressed air as required to meet the operating conditions. The air pressure shall be suitable to produce a finely divided dense fog with the atomizer(s) used. To ensure against clogging the atomizer(s1 by salt deposition, the air should have a relative humidity of 95 to 98 percent at the

、point of release from the nozzle. 3.8 Means for humidifying the air at a temperature above the chamber temperature. A satisfactory method to attain the required humidity consists of passing the air in very fine bubbles through a tower containing heated water. The temperature of the tower water shoul

、d be at least 35OC. The permissible water temperature increases with increasing volume of air and with decreasing heat insulation of the chamber and the temperature of its surroundings, but it should not exceed a value above which an excess of moisture is introduced into the chamber for example, 43O

、C at an air pressure of 83 kPa (i2 pounds per square inch), or a value which makes it impossible to meet the requirement for operating temperature. 3.9 Optical or Electrical Test Equipment. Use apparatus as described in FOTP-20 for measuring the change in optical transmittance (throughput) of the tr

、ansmitting fibers, or apparatus as described in FOTP-34 for measuring insertion loss, as directed by the Detail Specification. Use other optical or electrical measuring equipment as may be specified by the Detail Specification. Copyright Electronic Industries Alliance Provided by IHS under license w
