SANS 5815:2009 Edition 2 1 Pesticides Rearing and handling of the silver fish (Lepisma saccharina L.) 1 Scope This standard specifies a method for the rearing and handling of the silver fish (Lepisma saccharina L.). 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for

8、s Division. SANS 5808, Pesticides General conditions and equipment for the rearing and handling of test insects. 3 Rearing conditions Maintain the rearing conditions prescribed in SANS 5808. NOTE Silver fish thrive in humid conditions (i.e. a humidity of 70 %). 4 Equipment and material 4.1 Coarse sa
9、nd. 4.2 Containers, glass specimen tubes, 75 mm 25 mm. 4.3 Rearing containers and lids, type A rearing containers and type A rearing container lids as described in SANS 5808, or any other suitable round, square or rectangular containers. 5 Rearing media Use the following with (c) and (d) placed in t
10、he containers (see 4.2): a) coarse, unprinted pieces of paper covered with glue, and dried; b) pressed fibreboard panels kept damp by dripping a little water on them when necessary; c) starch; and SANS 5815:2009 Edition 2 2 d) cotton wool saturated with water. 6 Procedure 6.1 Spread 1 kg of the sand
11、 (see 4.1) on the bottom of a rearing container (see 4.3), and place the media (see clause 5) on it. The containers with media (5(c) and 5(d) are placed horizontally on the sand. 6.2 Place 100 freshly-emerged adult sliver fish in the rearing container. 6.3 Oviposition will take place at random in th
12、e rearing container. NOTE Silver fish lays eggs only twice a year. 6.4 The first generation adults will emerge after approximately six months. 6.5 Rear new colonies by repeating the procedure in 6.1 to 6.4 (inclusive).
