ScopeThis SAE Standard defines the test conditions, procedures and performance specification for

、6, 12,and 24 V manually actuated headlamp beam control switches.2. ReferencesThere are no referenced publications specified herein.3. Definitions3.1 Headlamp Beam Control SwitchingAn operator activated device intended primarily to select the high orlow beam headlamp circuit. A secondary function may

、 incorporate an auxiliary circuit for override of thesemiautomatic beam switching control.4. Test4.1 Test Equipment and Instrumentation4.1.1 POWER SUPPLYThe power supply shall comply with the following specifications:a. Output current: Capable of supplying the continuous and inrush currents of the d

、esign load(reference: 4.2.1.1.).b. Regulation:1. Dynamic: The output voltage at the supply shall not deviate more than 1.0 V from zero to maximumload (including inrush current) and should recover 63% of its maximum excursion within 100 ms.2. Static: The output voltage at the supply shall not deviate

、 more than 2% with changes in static loadfrom zero to maximum (not including inrush current), and means shall be provided to compensatefor static input line variations.c. Ripple Voltage: Maximum 300 mV peak-to-peak.SAE J564 Revised MAR90-2-4.1.2 VOLTMETER0 to 30 V maximum full-scale deflection, accu

、racy 1/2%.NOTEA digital meter having at least a 3-1/2 digit readout with an accuracy of 1% plus 1 digit isrecommended for mV readings.4.1.3 AMMETERCapable of carrying full system load current, accuracy 3%.4.2 Test ProceduresEnvironmental conditions have been selected for this document to help assure

、 satisfactoryoperations under general use conditions. It is essential to duplicate specific environmental conditions underwhich the device is expected to function.4.2.1 ELECTRICAL LOADS4.2.1.1 The design load applied to the switch is the electrical load specified by the number and type of bulbs (oro

、ther electrical load devices) to be operated by each circuit of the switch. For example, the design load forthe headlamp circuit may be four sealed beam headlamp units (2-4651 and 2-4652) and four - No. 194bulbs.4.2.1.2 The switch shall be operated at 6.4 V DC 0.2 V for a 6 V system, 12.8 V DC 0.2 f

、or a 12 V system, or25.6 V DC 0.2 V for a 24 V system. These voltages shall be the open circuit voltage measured at theinput termination on the switch.4.2.2 TEMPERATURE TEST PROCEDURE4.2.2.1 The switch shall be exposed for 1 h without electrical load to each of the following temperatures: 25 C 5 C;

、74 + (0 C - 3 C); 32 + (3 C, 0 C). The switch shall be manually cycled at each temperature for10cycles at design load.4.2.2.2 The same switch shall be used for the endurance test described in 4.2.3.4.2.3 ENDURANCE TEST PROCEDURE4.2.3.1 The switch shall be electrically connected to operate its design

、 load (both primary and secondary circuitfunction design electrical loads) at a temperature of 25 C 5 C.4.2.3.2 Beam Control Switch (primary function): The switch shall be operated for a minimum of 50 000 cycles1.One complete cycle shall consist of sequencing through each position (high beam - low b

、eam - high beamwith dwell in each position) and return without dwell in any of the intermediate positions to the initialposition. The test equipment shall be arranged to provide the following switch operating time requirements:a. Travel Time: 0.1 to 0.5 s(time from one position to the next)b. Dwell T

、ime: 0.5 to 2.0 s(time in each position)c. Make andBreak Rate: 130 to 150 mm per s1. 50 000 cycles represents 14 cycles of headlamp switch operation every day for approximately 10 years, or 1 cycle for each 2 miles driven for 100 000 miles with 50% night driving.SAE J564 Revised MAR90-3-4.2.3.3 Semi

、automatic Beam Control Switch (secondary function): The switch shall meet all the requirements ofthe beam control switch except as follows:One complete cycle shall consist of sequencing through each position (with dwell in each beam position):a. High beamb. Override mechanismc. Low beamd. Override m

、echanisme. High beamThe test equipment shall be arranged to provide the operating time requirements. The semiautomatic beam control switch shall be operated for 25 000 cycles2.4.2.3.4 At the completion of the cycle testing, the switch shall be operated for 1 h in the headlamp position with thedesign

、load(s) connected.4.2.4 VOLTAGE DROP TEST PROCEDURE4.2.4.1 The voltage drop from the input terminal(s) to the corresponding output terminal(s) shall be measured atdesign load before and after the completion of the endurance test and shall be the average of threeconsecutive readings. These voltage dr

、op readings should exclude the voltage drop across the circuitbreaker(s). If wiring is an integral part of the switch, the voltage drop measurement shall be madeincluding 75 mm 6 mm of wire on each side of the switch; otherwise the measurement shall be made atthe switch terminals.5. Performance Requ

、irements5.1 During and after each of the cycles described in 4.2.2 and 4.2.3, the switch shall be electrically andmechanically operable.5.2 The voltage drop shall not exceed 0.3 V when measured as in 4.2.4, before and after completion of the testsdescribed in 4.2.3.6. 26、the S.A.E. format.2. Temperature test, endurance test setup and endurance requirements rephrased and rearranged tobe consistent with S.A.E. suggested format.3. Voltage drop test procedure Section 4.2.4 wire length changed from 3 in to 75 mm 6 mm to beconsistent with the S.A.E. standard.4. All temper

、atures changed to degree celcius to be consistent with the S.A.E. standard.5. The cycle rate shall not exceed 30 cpm. This was removed and replaced with travel time and dwelltime to be consistent with the S.A.E. format.6. 50 000 cycles replaces 100 000 cycles 4.2.3.2. Based on minimum usage requirem

、ent.7. 25 000 cycles replaces 50 000 cycles 4.2.3.3. Based on minimum usage requirement.8. The dwell time requirement revised to be consistent with the S.A.E. format.Relationship of SAE Standard to ISO StandardNot applicable.ApplicationThis standard defines the test conditions, procedures and performance specification for 6, 12,and 24 V manually actuated headlamp beam control switches.Reference SectionThere are no referenced publications specified herein.Developed by the SAE Auxiliary Devices Standards CommitteeSponsored by the SAE Lighting Coordinating Committee
