It is part of the certification criteria of the National Marine Manufacturers Association Personal Watercraft Certification Program and has become a technical refere

    6、nce within ISO 13590 Personal Watercraft Construction and System Installation Requirements. As a result of this activity, the Recommended Practice classification of this SAE Technical Report can be upgraded to the Standard level. 1. SCOPE This SAE Standard applies to personal watercraft as defined i

    7、n Section 3. 1.1 Purpose This document specifies guidelines for determining flotation performance for personal watercraft. DEFINITIONS 3.1 ASTM American Society for Testing and Materials. 3.2 Bilge The area in the watercraft below a height of 100 mm (4 in) measured from the lowest point in the watercraft, where liquid can collect when the watercraft is in its static floating position, except engine r

    11、ooms. 3.3 Connected Allowing a flow of water in excess of 4.1 mL (one-quarter fluid ounce) per hour from the engine room bilge into any other compartment with a 300 mm (12 in) head of water on the engine room side of the bulkhead. 3.4 Engine Room Bilge The area in the engine room or a connected comp

    12、artment below a height of 300 mm (12 in) measured from the lowest point where liquid can collect when the watercraft is in its static floating position. 3.5 Engine Room The compartment where the engine is permanently installed. 3.6 Personal Watercraft A vessel less than 4 m (13 ft) in length which u

    13、ses an internal combustion engine powering a water jet pump as its primary source of propulsion, and is designed to be operated by a person or persons sitting, standing, or kneeling on rather than within the confines of a hull. 3.7 Sealed Compartment An enclosure that can resist an exterior water le

    14、vel of 300 mm (12 in) measured from the lowest point where liquid can collect in an adjacent compartment when the watercraft is in its static floating position without seepage of more than 4.1 mL (one-quarter fluid ounce) per hour. 4. FLOTATION TEST 4.1 Test Conditions 4.1.1 Each personal watercraft

    15、 shall be loaded with its permanent appurtenances or with weight equivalent to its permanent appurtenances. SAE J1973 Revised AUG2008 - 3 -4.1.2 Fuel and/or oil tanks shall be full. 4.1.3 An additional iron weight of 10 kg (22 lb) shall be added for each person that the personal watercraft is rated

    16、to carry. The additional weight shall be secured to a portion of the watercraft that will be submerged during the test. 4.2 Test Procedure 4.2.1 The watercraft shall be swamped, allowing calm, fresh water to flow between the inside and outside of the watercraft, either over the sides, through a hull

    17、 opening, or both. Entrapped air in the flooded portion of the watercraft must be eliminated. 4.2.2 If air chambers are used to provide flotation on the watercraft, water shall flood the two largest air chambers and all chambers integral with the hull. 4.3 Acceptance Level 4.3.1 The watercraft shall

    18、 have enough flotation to keep a portion of the watercraft above the surface of the water when it has been submerged for at least 18 h. 5. FLOTATION MATERIAL 5.1 Flotation materials shall meet the requirements in 5.2 through 5.9 as listed in Table 1 when used in the: (a) engine room bilge, (b) engin

    19、e room, or (c) bilge, unless located in a sealed compartment. 5.2 Vapor Test The flotation material shall not reduce in buoyant force more than 5% after being immersed in a fully saturated gasoline vapor atmosphere for 30 days at a minimum temperature of 38 C. 5.3 24-hour Gasoline Test The flotation

    20、 material shall not reduce in buoyant force more than 5% after being immersed for 24 h at 23 C 2 C in reference fuel B of ASTM D 471. 5.4 30-day Gasoline Test The flotation material shall not reduce in buoyant force more than 5% after being immersed for 30 days at 23 C 2 C in reference fuel B of AST

    24、 2 of ASTM D 471. 5.7 24-hour Bilge Cleaner Test The flotation material shall not reduce in buoyant force more than 5% after being immersed for 24 h at 23 C 2 C in a 5% solution of trisodium phosphate in water. 5.8 30-day Bilge Cleaner Test The flotation material shall not reduce in buoyant force mo

    25、re than 5% after being immersed for 30 days at 23 C 2 C in a 5% solution of trisodium phosphate in water. 5.9 The buoyant force reduction in items 5.2 through 5.8 of this section shall be measured in accordance with ASTM D 2842. 6.
