CONTAMINATION SAE J1703 and SAE J1704 brake fluids are susceptible to various types of contamination which can be detrimental t

、o the safe and efficient performance of brake actuating systems. 3.1 Water Contamination SAE J1703 and SAE J1704 brake fluids are hygroscopic and absorb moisture when exposed to the atmosphere. The degree of moisture absorption is dependent upon a number of variables. Among these are the relative hy

、groscopicity of the brake fluid, the area of the surface exposed to the atmosphere, the time of exposure, and the temperature and relative humidity of the atmosphere. Water contamination can also occur from condensation resulting from atmospheric temperature changes or the mechanical entrance of the

、 free water. This water contamination will lower the Equilibrium Reflux Boiling Point (ERBP) (see Figure 1) and increase the Low Temperature Viscosity (see Figure 2) and impact inhibition of corrosion and elastomer compatibility performance. 19、ed under conditions where contamination with petroleum products can occur, specific precautions must be taken to prevent contamination. Motor vehicle brake fluids contaminated by petroleum products will cause excessive swelling and softening of brake system rubber parts, resulting in brake system fa

、ilure. Even very small contamination levels of brake fluids with petroleum products which are not visible may be detrimental to the rubber seals of a brake system. Only if higher concentrations are present, a contamination with petroleum type contaminants will become obvious by causing a visual clou

、diness or opaque appearance of the brake fluid. 3.3 Particle Contamination Specific precautions must be taken to prevent contamination of motor vehicle brake fluids with particles or solid material of any sort which could interfere with the proper operation of the braking system components. In parti

、cular, abrasive particles will cause scuffing and wear of the pistons and cylinders and can damage the elastomer seal materials. Furthermore, single bigger particles may cause internal leakage of seals or hydraulic valves, followed by pressure loss and malfunction of the brakes. 4. RECOMMENDATIONS 4

、.1 Material Control - Raw Materials a. Material specifications should be established for all ingredients of the brake fluid formulation. b. Purchase specifications should include required chemical and physical tests to be performed on each lot of material. c. Inbound inspection and testing requireme

、nts are to be identified with pass and fail limits. d. Certificate of Analysis to be forwarded before or with each delivery. e. Inbound receipts are to be quarantined until inbound testing and/or review of Certificate of Analysis is completed and product is approved for production. f. Chemical and p

、hysical tests may be required to ensure that specifications are met. g. Finished product reports should report lot numbers of each component. 4.2 In-Processing Blending Lines and Finished Product Loading Lines a. Processing equipment used in the manufacture of a brake fluid is to be controlled to in

、sure final quality of material is maintained. b. Use of dedicated storage tanks, pumps, transfer and filling lines is suggested for each fluid components and final brake fluids. c. Materials of construction are to be compatible with all fluid contact in both intermediate and final fluids. d. Brake f

、luids are hygroscopic. The manufacturing operations should have in-process guidelines to minimize the water content of finished brake fluid. 4.3 Cleaning Processes - Storage Tanks, Process Lines and Final Discharge Lines a. All component lines and blending tanks must be clean, dry and odor free befo

、re use in the manufacture of brake fluid. b. Component lines are to be filled. After 48 hours, product is tested at the discharge or transfer point for physical and chemical properties before being placed in service for brake fluid manufacture. c. Component and finished product lines are to be cover

、ed when not in use to maintain product integrity. SAE INTERNATIONAL J1706 JUN2017 Page 6 of 7 d. Storage tanks must be clean, dry, and odor free before being placed in component of finished brake fluid service. e. Before Storage tank(s) are put into service pre-inspection is critical. One procedure

、is to pour previously tested finished fluid on the side wall, collected and tested to assure no contaminate is present. Additionally, introducing fluid on the tank floor and allowing it to collect and stand at the low point for a reasonable time. The product is then tested to assure no contaminants

、are present. f. Storage tanks should be protected from additional moisture pickup. Purging tanks with dry air or nitrogen before filling is recommended. Further protection may be with desiccants on any atmospheric air vents. Further protection may be with dry air or nitrogen pads on tank. 4.4 Materi

、al Handling Finished Brake Fluids a. Whenever possible bulk containers for storage and shipping should be restricted to the same grade of brake fluid. b. Tank Trucks are to be clean, dry and odor free before loading. Discharge lines, when present, should be flushed and material quality verified befo

、re loading. Compartment cover(s) on top of tank should be covered as much as possible to limit exposure to airborne particles or moisture. c. Tank cars should be drained and material tested, if acceptable, loaded. Purging with dry air or nitrogen before loading is recommended. Compartment cover(s) o

、n top of tank should be covered as much as possible to limit exposure to airborne particles or moisture. d. New clean drums are to be used for brake fluid. Material of construction and lining, if present, must be compatible with the fluid. If the drum manufacturer uses a sealing compound it must be

、first checked for product compatibility before brake fluid is filled into containers. Purchase Orders are to specify compound required. e. All filling lines are to be tested before any loading starts. f. Brake fluid should be filtered through a suitable filter, 10 microns or less, before any filling

、 operation. Filters should be as close to discharge lines as possible. g. Extreme care must be exercised in transferring fluid from its original container. h. Inbound bulk vessels sampling is recommended from the discharge line. A Certificate of analysis should be available at time of discharge Samp

、le appearance should be checked before unloading. The supplier may provide recommended inbound inspection procedures for discharge of bulk vessels. i. The possible toxicity hazard and environmental effects of motor vehicle brake fluid must be considered in terms of any applicable laws or regulations

、. 4.5 Records and Retain Samples a. A record of every blend manufactured is to be traceable to all raw materials, by raw material lot number. b. Retain samples of all blends, bulk shipments and packaging runs are to be retained for five full calendar years. 4.6 Dispensing of Brake Fluids a. Contact

、of any petroleum product with any dispensing devices MUST be avoided. This includes drum and pail nozzles or spouts. b. Avoid multiple transfers of the fluid from container to container. The fluid should be transferred directly from the shipping container to the reservoir. If it is necessary to tran

、sfer fluid to a smaller container, from a drum or pail, it is recommended to use a compatible disposable container, of small enough size for immediate filling of reservoir(s). Upon completion of filling reservoir(s) fluid is to NOT to be returned to the original container. SAE INTERNATIONAL J1706 JU
