、evised 2015-10 Superseding J1319 AUG2010 Rear Fog Lamp Systems RATIONALE The intent of the 2010 revision to SAE J1319 was to create a new photometric table to allow an incandescent rear fog lamp designed to meet photometric values specified in United Nations (UN) Regulation 38 to also meet the photo

、metric values contained in this standard. The photometric values shown in Figure 1 were lower than the UN. Regulation 38 values to account for differences between the UN. Test voltage of 13.5 volts versus the design voltage of 12.8 volts for incandescent light sources typically used in rear fog lamp

、s at that time. With these changes, SAE J1319 and UN Regulation 38 were harmonized with respect to photometric values for rear fog lamps utilizing incandescent light sources. However, L.E.D. light sources that may operate at constant current were were not fully considered in the 2010 update of SAE J

、1319. Rear fog lamps utilizing L.E.D. light sources may provide the same light output at any given test point throughout a range of voltages. An L.E.D. rear fog lamp designed to meet the minimum photometric values of UN Regulation 38 would be able to meet the lowered photometric values in Figure 1 o

、f the 2010 version of this standard. The issue needing to be addressed is that L.E.D. rear fog lamps fulfilling the UN Regulation 38 requirement that the maximum luminous intensity in which all directions in which the lamp can be observed designed is 300 cd per lamp can fail the 250 cd maximum lumin

、ous intensity value shown Note 1 of Figure 1 of the 2010 version of this standard. This is because the light output of rear fog lamps utilizing L.E.D. light sources may not be reduced in the same manner that occurs in rear fog lamps utilizing incandescent light sources. Accordingly, Note 1 of Figure

、 1 of this standard has been revised to read “The maximum luminous intensity in all direction in which the lamp(s) can be observed is 300 cd per lamp.” With this change, SAE J1319 and UN Regulation 38 are harmonized with respect to photometric values for rear fog lamps utilizing incandescent light s

FOREWORD UN Regulation 38, Revision 3, Rear Fog Lamps is similar to this Recommended Practice. SAE INTERNAT

GUIDELINES The following guidelines are intended to provide optimal performance of the system and uniformity in use but shall not be considered part of the requ

、irements. 7.1 Installation Guidelines The user is cautioned that the mounting and use of rear fog lamps are specified by various regulatory agencies. 7.1.1 The illuminated edge of a rear fog lamp lens should be no closer than 100 mm from the illuminated edge of any stop lamp lens when projected on a

、 vertical transverse plane. 7.1.2 The rear fog lamp system should consist of either: (a) one lamp mounted on or to the left of a vertical plane through the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle, or (b) two lamps symmetrically located about the vehicle centerline. 7.1.3 The rear fog lamp system shou

、ld be wired so that it can be turned on only when the headlamps and/or front fog lamps are on, and should have a switch that allows the rear fog lamp to be turned off when headlamps are on. 7.1.4 Visibility of the rear fog lamp should not be obstructed by any part of the vehicle throughout the photo

、metric test angles for the lamp unless the lamp is designed to comply with all photometric and visibility requirements with these obstructions considered. The signal from the lamp should be visible through a horizontal angle from 45 degrees to the left to 45 degrees to the right. 7.1.5 The rear fog

、lamp system should include a continuous yellow indicator that illuminates when the system is switched on that should be mounted in a location readily visible to the driver of the vehicle. 7.2 Rear Fog Lamp Switching The rear fog lamp(s) shall not be able to be activated unless the vehicles parking,

、tail, side marker, and license plate lamps are illuminated. The rear fog lamp(s) shall be illuminated only by specific, deliberate action, shall not be illuminated by the switching on of any other lighting function, and shall be able to be switched off independently of any other lighting function. T

、he rear fog lamp(s) shall switch off and remain off until deliberately switched on again when the vehicles ignition or parking lamps are switched off, except that if the parking lamps or ignition is switched off for less than 30 seconds, the rear fog lamp(s) may remain illuminated. 8.
