SCOPE This Aerospace Standard (AS) 5659/4 Physical Layer Specification provides guidance for the physical layer of optical netwo

    15、rks which use Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), within the AS5659 WDM LAN specification document family. The physical layer consists of the optical interconnections between the functional components of the network. Performance requirements for general interconnections are described. For guidan

    16、ce, standards are identified, corresponding to each of several environments, which describe physical layer design, installation, maintenance, and training. 2.     42、cture which connects the ONEs. 3.1 WDM LAN Functional Elements Within the WDM LAN there are four types of functional elements. 3.1.1 Client or Application The Client or Application is the equipment that is connected to the WDM LAN. Note that the Client or Application may use electrical or optical me

    43、ans to connect to the WDM LAN. 3.1.2 Client Adaptation Element (CAE) The Client Adaptation Element provides adaptation, if required, of the client signals. The CAE may include multiplexing or de-multiplexing, add/drop functionality, among other functions. The CAE is the optical bridge between the Cl

    44、ient or Application and the backbone network which carries the aggregate WDM LAN signals. Client adaptation functionality is covered in the AS5659/2 specification. 3.1.3 Optical Network Element (ONE) The Optical Network Element (ONE) contains the functions of the Optical Backbone Network (OBN) that

    45、is described in AS5659/1. It is transparent, meaning there are no optical to electrical conversions, within the OBN. ONEs process the aggregated WDM LAN traffic over the backbone network, and therefore must accommodate the full range of wavelengths, signals, and protocols intended for use in the WDM

    46、 LAN. AS5659/4 pertains to the physical layer infrastructure that supports the ONE. 3.1.4 Network Management and Control Network Management and Control (NM that is, control of chromatic dispersion. 4.2 Network Access Interface (NAI) Interconnect between ONEs and CAEs An OFI serves as the optical int

    47、erconnect between Optical Network Elements (ONEs) and Client Access Elements (CAEs) as the access to the optical backbone. These fibers or waveguides must be able to transport the signals that traverse the NAI. Transmission of the full range of optical backbone wavelengths may not be required if the

    48、 signals crossing the interface consist of a single or small group of wavelengths. 4.3 Client Access Interface (CAI) Interconnect between Client and ONE If a client or application connects to the WDM LAN using an optical interface, an OFI also serves as the interconnection between the CAI and the cl

    49、ient. Note that it is also possible for a client or application to connect directly to the optical backbone, with no requirement for a CAI.
