    5、Type I Aircraft Deicing/Anti-Icing Fluids RATIONALE This ARP documents the steps and processes: (a) to select samples for testing experimental SAE Type I fluids according to AMS1424 and ARP5945, (b) to run field spray tests, (c) to generate holdover time guidelines from endurance time data, and (d)

    6、to add and remove fluids from the lists of fluids published by The Federal Aviation Administration and Transport Canada. The intent of this ARP is to help fluid manufacturers and users to understand the overall process that a fluid must go through to be used in aviation. It describes and documents t

    7、he processes by which an experimental fluid may become useable fluid. FOREWORD Meeting all of the technical requirements of AMS1424 is not sufficient for a Type I de/anti-icing fluid to be used on an aircraft. For such a fluid to be used commercially, it must further demonstrate that (1) its perform

    8、ance is such that it can be used with the Type I generic holdover time guidelines published by the regulators and (2) its name appears on a list of fluids published by regulators1. Before commercialization, it is further recommended that a field spray trial be conducted with the fluid to demonstrate

    9、 acceptable operational performance. The intent of this ARP is to help fluid manufacturers and users understand the overall process that a Type I fluid must go through to be used with the Type I holdover time guidelines and be included on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transport Canad

ALLOWANCE

    34、TIME: Time, from the initial application of fluid, that a fluid is expected to provide protection of an aircraft against contamination from conditions of or mixed with ice pellets or small hail. Allowance times are derived from aerodynamic fluid flow off performance data and visual inspection of flu

    35、ids exposed to these precipitation types. ENDURANCE TIME: Time that a fluid can endure defined and controlled temperature and precipitation conditions before visual failure. Endurance time tests are defined in ARP5945. FAA/TRANSPORT CANADA LISTS OF FLUIDS: Lists published by FAA and Transport Canada

    36、 in their Holdover Time Guidelines which include fluids that have been tested for endurance times (according to ARP5945), anti-icing performance (according to 3.5.2 of AMS1424 using the test method in AS5901) and aerodynamic acceptance (3.5.3 of AMS1424 using the test method in AS5900) only. FLUID-S

    37、PECIFIC HOLDOVER TIME (HOT) GUIDELINE: A holdover time guideline that contains holdover times for a specific Type II, III, or IV fluid. A fluid-specific holdover time guideline can only be used with the specific fluid it is intended for; it cannot be used with any other fluid. Currently, no Type I f

    38、luids have fluid specific holdover times. GENERIC HOLDOVER TIME (HOT) GUIDELINE: A generic holdover time guideline can be used with any fluid that is qualified to be the same fluid type as the generic guideline. Unlike the Type II/IV generic HOT table values, there is no specific protocol in place f

    39、or determining Type I generic HOT table values, however there is an existing and documented process for ensuring that the performance of a new Type I fluid is within the performance limits of historically tested and accepted Type I fluids. Also unlike the Type II/IV values, the Type I generic values

    40、 are relatively static and do not change as new Type I fluids are added and removed from the list of qualified fluids. The reason for the static nature of the Type I generic table is that a significant body of research and testing conducted between the years of 1990s and 2000s has shown that all Typ

    41、e I fluids formulated with glycol perform in a similar manner from an endurance time perspective. HOLDOVER TIME (HOT): Time, from the initial application of anti-icing fluid, that a fluid is expected to provide protection of an aircraft against freezing or frozen precipitation. Holdover times are de

    42、rived primarily from visual inspection of fluids exposed to freezing and frozen precipitation. HOLDOVER TIME GUIDELINE: A table giving the holdover time for various precipitation conditions and temperatures with cautions and notes giving guidance to ground deicing/anti-icing crews and pilots. The “h

    43、oldover time guideline” is also often referred to as “holdover time table”. LOWEST OPERATIONAL USE TEMPERATURE (LOUT): The lowest operational use temperature of a Type I fluid is generally recognized as the higher of: a. The lowest temperature at which it meets the aerodynamics acceptance test (AS59

    44、00) for a given type of aircraft, or b. The freezing point of the fluid plus the freezing point buffer of 10 C (about 18 F). WATER SPRAY ENDURANCE TEST (WSET): A performance test defined in AS5901. 3. LABORATORY TESTING AND SAMPLE SELECTION 3.1 Preliminary Work In the course of development work, it

    45、is normal for fluid manufacturers to prepare various samples and verify the physical and performance properties of the fluids. To do this, they usually perform a certain amount of work within their own laboratories and will verify their results by having samples tested by the various external labora

    46、tories performing AMS1424 testing. SAE INTERNATIONAL ARP6207 Page 6 of 14 3.2 Type I Fluid Classification: Glycol (Conventional and Non-Conventional) and Non-Glycol AMS1424 sets the technical, environmentl and quality control provisions for aircraft deicing fluids. AMS1424 is defined as the foundati

    47、on specification for SAE Type I fluids. The SAE Type I fluids are divided into two categories, each having its own category specification 1) SAE Type I fluids based on “Glycol (Conventional and Non-Conventional)” and 2) “Non-Glycol” (3.1.1 of AMS1424). Glycol (Conventional) is defined as ethylene gl

    48、ycol, diethylene glycol, or propylene glycol. Glycol (Non-Conventional) is defined as organic non-ionic diols and triols. Non-Glycol is defined as all that is not Glycol (Conventional and Non-Conventional); mixtures of Glycol (Conventional and Non-Conventional) and Non-Glycol are also defined as Non

    49、-Glycol. SAE Type I fluid based on Conventional and Non-Conventional Gycol freezing point depressant are identified as AMS1424/1 Type I fluids. The purpose of the AMS1424/1 specification is to identify the SAE Type I fluid as a Conventional or Non-Conventianl Glycol based fluid.
