SCOPE1.1 FormThis specification covers an aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock.1.2 Appli

    6、cationThese products have been used typically for carburized parts requiring high minimum core hardness with a narrow range, reduced distortion and subject to magnetic particle inspection standards, but usage is not limited to such applications.2. Bars ordered cold finished may have hardness as high as 310 HB or equivalent (See 8.2).3.2.2 ForgingsAs ordered.3.2.3 Mechanical TubingCold finished, unless otherwise ordered, having hardness not higher than 295 HB, or

Tubing ordered hot finished and annealed or tempered shall have hardness not higher than 295 HB or equivalent (See 8.2).3.2.4 Forging Stock As ordered by the forging manufacturer.3.3 PropertiesThe product shall conform to the following requirements; hardness, tensile, and impac

    19、t testing shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A 370:SAE AMS6539 Page 4 of 73.3.1 MacrostructureVisual examination of transverse full cross-sections from bars, billets tube rounds (solid, not hollow), and forging stock, etched in hot hydrochloric acid in accordance with ASTM E 381, shall show

    20、no pipe or cracks. Macroetch standards for such tubes shall be agreed upon by purchaser and vendor.3.3.2 Average Grain Size of Bars, Forgings, and TubingShall be ASTM No. 5 or finer determined in accordance with AST

    23、M E 112.3.3.3 Response to Heat Treatment of Bars, Forgings, Tubing and Forging StockSpecimens extracted from the product shall have the properties shown in Table 3 for both tempering temperatures after being austenitized by heating to 1607 F 25 (875 C 14), holding at heat for a time commensurate wit

    24、h section thickness, heating equipment, and procedure used. Specimens to be tempered at 392 F (210 C) shall be air quenched to below 90 F (32 C), cooled to -100 F (-73 C) or colder, holding at that temperature for not less than two hours andwarmed in air to room temperature. Specimens to be tempered

    25、 at 1040 F (560 C) shall be air quenched to below 90 F (32 C).     27、 materials and from imperfections detrimental to usage of the product.3.4.1 Steel shall be aircraft-quality conforming to AMS2301.SAE AMS6539 Page 5 of 73.4.2 Bars and mechanical tubing ordered hot finished or cold finished or ground, turned, or polished shall, after removal of the standard stock re

    28、moval allowance in accordance with AS1182, be free from seams, laps, tears, and cracks open to the machined, ground, turned, or polished surface.3.4.3 Grain flow of die forgings, except in areas that contain flash-line end grain, shall follow the general contour of the forgings showing no evidence o

    29、f reentrant grain flow.3.5 Tolerances3.5.1 BarsIn accordance with AMS2251.3.5.2 Mechanical Tubing In accordance with AMS2253.4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS4.1 Responsibility for inspectionThe vendor of the product shall supply all samples for vendors tests and shall be responsible for the performan

    30、ce of allrequired tests. Purchaser reserves the right to sample and to perform any confirmatory testing deemed necessary to ensure that the product conforms to specified requirements.4.2 Classification of Tests4.2.1 Acceptance TestsComposition (3.1), condition (3.2), macrostructure (3.3.1), average

    31、grain size (3.3.2), response to heat treatment for both tempering temperatures (3.3.3), frequency-severity cleanliness rating (3.4.1), and tolerances (3.5) are acceptance tests and shall be performed on each heat or lot as applicable.4.2.2 Periodic TestsGrain flow of die forgings (3.4.3) is a period

    32、ic test and shall be performed at a frequency selected by the vendor unless frequency of testing is specified by purchaser.4.3 Sampling and Testing4.3.1 Bars, Mechanical Tubing, and Forging StockIn accordance with AMS2370.4.3.2 Forgings In accordance with AMS2372.4.4 Reports4.4.1 The vendor of the b

    33、ars, forgings and tubing shall furnish with each shipment a report showing the results of tests for composition macrostructure, response to heat treatment and frequency-severity cleanliness rating of each heat, and for condition, average grain size of each lot, and stating that the product conforms

    34、to the other technical requirements. This report shall include the purchase order number, heat and lot numbers, AMS6539 product form and size (and/or part number, if applicable) and quantity. If forgings are supplied, the size and melt source of stock used to make the forgings shall also be included

    35、.SAE AMS6539 Page 6 of 74.4.2 If the ship size/shape is cut from a larger cross section, report the nominal metallurgically worked size (See 3.2.1).4.4.3 The vendor of forging stock shall furnish with each shipment a report showing the results of tests for composition, macrostructure, response to he

    36、at treatment and frequency-severity cleanliness rating of each heat. This report shall include the purchase order number, heat number, AMS6539, size and quantity.4.5 Resampling and Retesting4.5.1 Bars, Mechanical Tubing, and Forging StockIn accordance with AMS2370.4.5.2 Forgings In accordance with A

    37、MS2372.5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY5.1 SizesExcept when exact lengths or multiples of exact lengths are ordered, straight bars and tubing will be acceptable in mill lengths of 6 to 20 feet (1.8 to 6.1 m) but not more than 10% of any shipment shall be supplied in lengths shorter than 10 feet (3 m).5.2

    38、 Identification5.2.1 Bars and Mechanical Tubing In accordance with AMS2806.5.2.2 Forgings In accordance with AMS2808.5.2.3 Forging Stock As agreed upon by purchaser and vendor.5.3 Protective TreatmentBars and mechanical tubing ordered cold drawn, cold rolled, ground, turned, or polished shall be pro

    39、tected from corrosion prior to shipment.5.4 PackagingThe product shall be prepared for shipment in accordance with commercial practice and in compliance with applicable rules and regulations pertaining to the handling, packaging, and transportation of the product to ensure carrier acceptance and saf

    40、e delivery.6. ACKNOWLEDGMENTA vendor shall include this specification number letter in all quotations and when acknowledging purchase orders.7. REJECTIONSProduct not conforming to this specification, or to modifications authorized by purchaser, will be subject to rejection.SAE AMS6539 Page 7 of 78.
